Heartiest Congratulations to Marina Tabassum on Winning the Ekushey Padak in Architecture! 🎉

We at Buildcon Bangladesh are thrilled to extend our warmest congratulations to renowned architect Marina Tabassum on being awarded the prestigious Ekushey Padak 2026 in the field of Architecture — one of the highest civilian honours in Bangladesh.

Marina Tabassum’s recognition with the Ekushey Padak — the nation’s second-highest civilian award — is a testament to her remarkable contributions to architecture, culture, and society. This honour acknowledges her visionary approach to design, her deep engagement with community needs, and her global influence as a leader in sustainable and human-centred architecture.

🌍 A Global Architectural Icon:

Marina Tabassum is internationally celebrated for her innovative work that bridges local context with global architectural dialogue. She made history as the first Bangladeshi architect to win the prestigious Aga Khan Award for Architecture twice, first for the Bait-ur-Rouf Mosque in Dhaka (2016) and more recently for her climate-resilient Khudi Bari project in 2025 — a modular, affordable housing solution addressing displacement due to floods and river erosion.

📢 An Inspiration for Bangladesh & Beyond:

Her work has consistently demonstrated how thoughtful architectural practice can improve lives, empower communities, and respond to pressing environmental challenges. Beyond practice, Marina has also shaped minds as an educator and has been recognised globally — including being named one of Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People.

This Ekushey Padak honour not only celebrates her past achievements but also highlights the power of architecture to create meaningful and humane environments. We salute Marina Tabassum for her immense contributions and for continuing to elevate Bangladeshi architecture on the world stage. 🌟

The global construction industry is rapidly evolving, driven by sustainability, durability, and smart infrastructure needs. Innovative building materials are playing a critical role in reducing carbon footprint, enhancing performance, and extending the service life of structures.

From low-carbon cements and high-performance concrete (HPC/UHPC) to self-healing concrete, smart materials, advanced insulation, and recycled construction products, these innovations are redefining how the world builds. Engineered timber and circular materials are also gaining momentum as sustainable alternatives in modern construction.

For Bangladesh, adopting such global innovations can significantly improve construction quality, climate resilience, and long-term sustainability—supporting the nation’s growing infrastructure demands.

At Buildcon Bangladesh, we believe knowledge-sharing and innovation are key to building a smarter, greener future.

Bangladesh’s building materials industry stands as one of the strongest pillars of the country’s rapid urbanization and infrastructure development. Driven by mega projects, housing demand, industrial expansion, and private sector investments, the sector continues to evolve with resilience and innovation.

Cement, steel, bricks, aggregates, glass, ceramics, cables, and finishing materials form the backbone of this ecosystem. Local manufacturers have significantly enhanced capacity and quality over the past decade, reducing import dependency while meeting international standards. At the same time, global brands and advanced technologies have strengthened competitiveness, efficiency, and sustainability across the value chain.

Despite challenges such as energy costs, foreign exchange volatility, and demand fluctuations, the industry is adapting through operational efficiency, product diversification, digitalization, and a growing focus on green and sustainable construction materials. The rising adoption of environment-friendly products, innovative solutions, and smart construction practices signals a gradual shift toward a more sustainable future.

Platforms like Buildcon Bangladesh play a crucial role in connecting manufacturers, suppliers, developers, engineers, and policymakers—fostering collaboration, knowledge sharing, and business growth across the construction ecosystem.

As Bangladesh moves closer to its vision of becoming a developed nation, the building materials industry will remain a key enabler—supporting economic growth, employment generation, and sustainable urban development.

Bangladesh’s cement and steel industries are struggling with weak demand, overcapacity, and thin margins, but large producers are surviving due to long-term structural advantages. Ownership of ships, integrated logistics, and energy-efficient technologies like VRM have significantly reduced costs for big players. Severe overcapacity has triggered price wars, forcing many factories to run far below capacity. Meanwhile, new large-scale steel plants with advanced technology are expected to accelerate industry consolidation, putting smaller millers under greater pressure.

Yet, even in this prolonged downturn, a group of large millers have managed to hold its ground, not because of any market recovery, but due to structural advantages built over time

Bangladesh stands at the frontline of climate vulnerability — but also at the forefront of climate resilience. As extreme weather events, rising sea levels, urban flooding, heatwaves, and salinity intrusion continue to threaten our communities, the need for Climate Resilient Infrastructure has never been more urgent.

From cyclone-resistant coastal housing to elevated roads, resilient water systems, green buildings, and sustainable urban drainage — every project we design today must be built to withstand tomorrow’s climate realities.

Resilient infrastructure is not a choice for Bangladesh — it is a national imperative.
It protects lives, strengthens our economy, safeguards investments, and ensures that development remains sustainable for future generations.

Let’s commit to infrastructure that is durable, adaptive, low-carbon, and nature-inclusive.

A climate-resilient Bangladesh is possible — if we plan smartly, design responsibly, and build with long-term vision.

🌱 Build resilient. Build sustainable. Build for the future.
