Hoje, no Brasil, comemoramos o Dia dos Professores.
Só temos a agradecer aqueles que nos ensinaram que educar é, antes de tudo, um ato humano. Por compartilhar alegrias e desafios e por deixar claro que sempre vale a pena continuar.

"Eu sou uma professora que trabalha com professores. É um lugar difícil de ser ocupado: tentar ensinar métodos para professores. A organização para a qual eu trabalho tem um compromisso de levar o que eles acreditam ser “educação de qualidade” para países em desenvolvimento. Eu percebi que muito do que eu tentava ensinar não fazia sentido algum para as professoras, então senti que precisaríamos saber mais sobre os métodos que elas usavam, antes de impor novas formas de fazer. Existe muita coisa problemática ali, muitas formas de fazer que comprovadamente dão errado, mas no meio de tudo isso sempre tem uma estratégia ou um comportamento que faz diferença e é nisso que a gente tem que se agarrar."

"I'm a teacher who works with teachers. It's a difficult place to be: try teaching methods to teachers. The organization for which I work has a commitment to take what they believe to be "quality education" for developing countries. I realized that much of what I tried to teach made no sense to the teachers, so I felt that we needed to know more about the methods they are used to, before imposing new ways of doing it. There's a lot of trouble in there, a lot of ways to make it go wrong, but in the middle of it all there's always a way to do it or a behavior that makes a difference and that's what we have to cling to."

"Eu não quero entrar muito na questão de como os pais estão educando seus filhos, mas algumas coisas me impressionam. Você acredita que eu tenho um aluno que ganha um presente todo dia? Sim, todos os dias. Em frente à escola tem uma grande loja de brinquedos. A mãe pega o filho na escola e os dois entram na loja. A mãe acha que está valorizando o fato do filho ter ido para a escola naquele dia. É tão complicado ver isso acontecendo e não poder falar nada. Assim, eu converso com as mães e pais, eles são muito carinhosos e atenciosos, mas parecem estar completamente perdidos. As crianças estão crescendo com uma dificuldade muito grande em entender o valor do trabalho, das coisas e quanto custa cada estilo de vida. " I don't want to get too into the question of how parents are raising their children, but some things impress me. Do you believe that I have a student who gets a gift every day? Yes, every day. In front of the school there is a large toy store. The mother picks up her son at school and they enter the store. She thinks that this is a way of showing how she appreciates the fact that her son went to school that day. It's so complicated to see it happening and not being able to say anything. So, I talk to the mothers and fathers, they are very caring and considerate, but they seem to be completely lost. Children are growing up with a very great difficulty in understanding the value of work, of things and how much each lifestyle costs. I'm not a materialistic person, but I know the price of living."

"Eu sou professor de Inglês e lutador profissional de Muay Thai. Trabalho em um colégio só para garotas. A educação aqui é extremamente rígida e coloca expectativas altíssimas sobre as meninas. Quase todas elas querem ser médicas ou cientistas. Elas não descansam nunca. A carga de tarefas, estudos e lição de casa é algo que eu nunca vi na vida. Na Inglaterra, onde eu estudei, a escola era bem mais tranquila em termos de exigências, mas também não formava grandes estudantes. A maioria dos meus amigos eram adolescentes muito indisciplinados, eu fui um deles.
Em alguns momentos, penso que falta um pouco de lazer e ócio para as meninas, um descanso mesmo. Mas existe um objetivo delas, da escola e dos pais. Elas parecem estar dispostas a tudo para alcançá-lo. O mais triste é que, pelo que eu percebi, são anos “perdidos”. A grande maioria delas não têm condições financeiras de entrar em uma universidade, então investem tudo nos anos do ensino médio, se desgastam com uma esperança um tanto quanto utópica."

I'm an English teacher and a professional Muay Thai fighter. I work at a girls' school. Education here is extremely rigid and puts extremely high expectations on girls. Almost all of them want to become doctors or scientists. They never rest. The burden of studying and homework is something I've never seen in my life.
Some times, I think there it would be good for the girls to rest a little, have some fun. But there is a purpose for them, the school and the parents. They seem to be willing to do anything to achieve it. From where I can see, there is a sad part in all of this: for many of the girls, those are "lost" years. The vast majority of them don't have the financial means to enter a university, so they invest everything in their high school years, wear out with a somewhat utopican hope."

"O sistema educacional daqui tem alguns problemas. Basicamente, a qualidade da educação depende do quanto os pais podem pagar. As escolas públicas não são tão boas, mas eu acredito que tudo depende do aluno. Se ele quer estudar, ele vai ser bom em qualquer lugar, com qualquer professor ou sala de aula. Nós temos muitos exemplos de pessoas assim, que mudaram a sua realidade porque estudaram e se esforçaram. Eu tive bons professores e minha mãe sempre me apoiou para estudar. Hoje, sou professora de informática em um colégio privado, e falo sempre para os meus alunos: ' Você tem que se esforçar muito para conseguir o que quer. Não desista e não dê menos do que o seu melhor!'

The educational system here has some problems: Basically, the quality of education depends on how much parents can afford. Public schools aren’t so good, but I believe it all depends on the student. If he or she wants to study, they'll be good anywhere, with any teacher or classroom. We have many examples of people who have changed their reality because they studied very hard. I had good teachers and my mother always supported on my studies. Today, I’m a computer teacher at a private school, and I always tell my students: 'You have to work hard to get what you want. Don't give up and don't give any less than your best!'

"Ser profissional é parte do trabalho, gostar de crianças é uma característica humana. São coisas diferentes. Não há conflito entre essas duas coisas. A coisa mais importante é compreender o tamanho de responsabilidade que é ensinar. Se você não consegue compreender isso, gostar ou não de crianças não faz a menor diferença.
Ensinar é um trabalho muito sério. Talvez o mais importante de todos.

Today we celebrate teacher s' day in Brazil. And we can only thank each one of the Brazilian educators who inspired us to go out searching for more and more classroom stories. You are the most valuable asset of any nation in the world. We hope you keep fighting for a space of respect, for more human working conditions and for a really transformative education. We'll be here to help with whatever we can!

"Acho que os baixos salários dificultam qualquer relação do professor com o profissionalismo. Existe uma diferença muito grande entre aqueles que ensinam por ideologia (são poucos) e aqueles que dependem do salário de professor para pagar as contas e sustentar seus filhos. Isso influencia diretamente na prática diária em sala de aula. A distância entre a responsabilidade dos professores e o salário que recebem é a causa de muitos dos problemas educacionais.

É uma questão de poder, né? A educação nunca vai ser livre.
Assim, do jeito que está, a educação está perfeita para o que o sistema precisa.

O filme 'The Wall' é muito atual. Continua sendo assim na grande maioria das escolas. Por mais que existam propostas diferentes, é a mesma coisa. E sempre vai ser. É uma utopia achar que a educação, como sistema, vai libertar. Por isso que eu me apego na ideia de que eu fiz a diferença no um a um. Se eu fiz a diferença na vida de um ou outro, valeu a pena. Acho que é isso que os professores que insistem e gostam de dar aulas pensam. Eu tenho uma cunhada que luta há muitos anos por uma educação de qualidade. É uma luta pesada. Eu vejo o tanto de dificuldades que ela já passou, porque ela tem um sonho, ela acredita. É uma luta ingrata e solitária muitas vezes. "

"I think low salaries make it difficult for any teacher to be related to professionalism. There is a big difference between those who teach by ideology (there are few) and those who depend on teacher's salary to pay the bills and support their children. This directly influences daily practice inside the classrooms. I think the gap between teachers' responsibility and their salary is the cause of many of the educational problems.

It's a question of power, right? Education will never be free.
So, the way it is, education is perfect for what the system needs.

The movie 'The Wall' is very current. It continues to be like that in the vast majority of schools. As much as there are different proposals, it's the same thing. And always will be. It's a dream to think that education, as a system, will make people free. That's why I cling to the idea that I made a difference one by one. If I made a difference in one or another kid's, it was worth it. I believe that's what teachers who insist in it think. I have a sister-in-law who has been fighting for many years for quality education. It's a heavy fight. I see how much trouble she has already had, because she has a dream, she believes. It's an ungrateful and solitary struggle many times."
