The “Peixe Preguiça” (Fish Sloth) is a group that enables local people to protect and restore the environment in their local area by creating a body that engages in activities like the creation of private nature reserves, restoration of riparian vegetation and environmental education. Our forest is the Atlantic forest, among the most biodiverse but threatened forests in the world, so our actions are globally significant. Our actions are informed by an integration of science and local knowledge. Our first prototype of this project, involves protecting the rainforest, water springs and riparian zones of the Camburi river. Here we will establish a private nature reserve bought and managed by the community. This reserve will benefit (1) the local community by protecting the quality of the water and the local scenery, and (2) the global community by storing carbon and protecting biodiversity. Whilst locals are driving the project, we’d like help from all around the world, as the storage of carbon and biodiversity is important for us all.
