Salvaging brick and stone building materials from deconstructed historic buildings in Toronto.

Reclaimed from the recently demolished Brantford Waterworks Engineer's House (c.1889) and pump building (c. 1930), we are excited to be actively salvaging thousands of high-quality exterior buff bricks this month. Thank you to for your collaboration in allowing us to work alongside you on this site.

The "B.B." marked buff bricks from the Engineer's House date back to the 1880s. We believe these bricks may have been manufactured by the local manufacturer Blacker's Brick Works, which operated from multiple sites in Brantford and specialized in buff and red brick from 1836 until 1890.

In 1930 the Brantford Waterworks facility was expanded to include a state-of-the-art pump building and filter building, using buff bricks in an Art Deco / Modernist style to complement the other older buff brick buildings on the site.

Alongside fellow designers, salvage enthusiasts, and community builders, Arcana was honoured to be a part of this year's in a presentation held at Old Fire Hall 30 on Friday evening. Together with , , and , we shared upcoming plans for the Ookwemin Minising Placemaking Pop-Up arriving at Biidaasige Park later this month. The structure will be built primarily from salvaged materials and was designed to be taken apart, and used again, in unique ways. will be supplying reclaimed + surplus masonry materials and leading the build -- stay tuned for updates!

Join us at Biidaasige Park for a conversation about the flood protection work and what happened to some of the materials left behind. We'll go deep on the Ookwemin Minising Placemaking Pop-Up arriving nearby in June, a collaboration between C40 Cities, Waterfront Toronto and the City of Toronto. Designed by Ha/f Climate, GXN (a branch of 3XN in Copenhagen), and AKT II Engineers, the structure is built primarily from salvaged materials and designed from the start to be taken apart, and used again, in unique ways. Ouroboros Deconstruction and Arcana Materials are contributing to the project and will walk you through how they find and give new life to materials that would otherwise disappear into a landfill. You will also hear about the design process, mapping materials and some of the challenges surrounding the reuse of salvaged materials.

Coming soon to our inventory: J.C. Edwards Ruabon quarry tiles, manufactured in the early 1900s in Wales then built into the Brantford Waterworks expansions around the 1920s. 6”x6” and with a durable 5/8” thickness, these beautiful tiles were not only aesthetic but also durable and practical in high traffic areas.

This manufacturer was active from 1903 to 1956 alongside other brick and tilemaking companies that utilized the local rich Etruria Marl clay beginning in the 19th century, giving the Ruabon village the nickname “Terracottapolis”. These highly durable, rich red quarry tiles were used throughout the UK and occasionally exported to Canada for special projects.

What other ways can we reuse reclaimed masonry within the Circular Economy? ❓🧱♻️
This past weekend, Arcana was invited by the Natural Building Coalition to host a hand a hands-on workshop at their annual conference for attendees to experiment with the concept of reclaimed brick and stone in rammed earth applications.

After a presentation in the main hall about how salvaged masonry and wood materials can follow different reuse paths, together with the help of ‘s forms made from reclaimed wood and expert rammed earth technique advice from , we walked participants through making their own brick-sized rammed earth samples made from a variety of aggregates from our reclaimed materials.

Thank you for having us, and to all the new connections made through this event. We look forward to experimenting more and collaborating with fellow sustainable building enthusiasts to find even more ways to keep building materials in circulation.
