East Coast Hoppers

East Coast Hoppers Our number one goal is to offer the most diverse selection of fresh, high quality brewing ingredients. Cheers! Matt Welcome to East Coast Hoppers!

Let me know if there is anything that you need that I don't have in stock and I'll do my best to bring it in for you! My name is Matt and I'm a long time avid all grain home brewer. For the longest time I've been frustrated with the lack of available brewing ingredients here in PEI but also within the the Maritimes. I'm also tired of placing an order online and paying almost the same value of that

order in shipping which inflates the cost of brewing to twice what it should be or could be if there was a good local supply of ingredients. So I decided to do something about it and start up Prince Edward Island's only brewing supply company that offers quality, fresh brewing ingredients such as malt, hops, yeast, water treatment salts, brewing hardware, equipment and much much more. Our number one goal is to offer the most diverse selection of fresh, high quality brewing ingredients at the most affordable prices. I'd love nothing more than to have everything you could possibly want to put in a brew all in one place. Our second goal is to try to get it to you without the high cost of shipping. If you are like me, you are tired of buying a bag of 2-row and then paying almost that value again to have it shipped to you. To help Maritime home brewers, we are incorporating on and off island deliveries into our business model. We plan to make stops in many communities, towns and cities around the Maritimes that have a lack of access to local brewing ingredients and supplies so you can stock up on everything you need and we'll bring them right to your area, converting those shipping costs into additional savings or more brewing ingredients. Stay tuned for our travel schedule to see when we will be in your area next! Feel free to send any special requests for items you would like to see us carry to: [email protected]

Cheers!

Ever wonder why some hops add the flavors that they do to your beers? Most of the flavors are coming from terpenes in the hops.

Terpenes are aromatic compounds (hydrocarbons) found in many plants and are present at high levels in hops. Hops have many different terpenes but some are much more abundant than others. These ratios of different terpenes are what make up the major flavor profiles of hops. Each of the major ones is worth its own post so lets start with Myrcene.

Myrcene is the dominant terpene found in hops making up 30-70% of total hop oils in most varieties.

It contributes significantly to the hoppy flavor and aroma in beer, particularly in heavily dry-hopped beers. It is often described as having a resinous, herbaceous, and slightly citrusy scent and is the most potent aromatic compound in hops. Even small amounts, just 13 ppb (parts per billion!!!) can be perceived.

It is highly volatile though, with an evaporation temperature of just 64°C. Due to this, most myrcene is driven off during the brewing process so late additions, such as dry hopping, are required to reintroduce it back to the beer. It is also not very water soluble so dry hopping (in the presence of alcohol) helps increase its absorption. It is a key flavor component in American-style IPAs which utilize hops like Cascade, Citra, Amarillo and Simcoe, all of which are high in myrcene.

Myrcene can also be found in cannabis (a close relative to hops), thyme, lemongrass, and ripe mangoes.

Myrcene also has potential medicinal properties such as pain relief, stress/anxiety relief and has anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant activities.

New Hop alert, this one from the USA: Krush

Krush was previously known as HBC 586 cultivar variety. Krush is bright and bold with big flavors of stone fruits, citrus, and berries. Krush is perfectly suited for fruit-forward IPAs and plays well with the usual suspects of Citra, Mosaic, El Dorado, Cashmere, Columbus and Galaxy.

This one smells amazing! I can't wait to try it out myself.
