Planning building a deck! Here are 4 main steps you must consider ⬇️
1️⃣ Decide if you want to build your deck on your own or with a contractor
Working on your own may save you money on labor, but a contractor's skillset and equipment will meet your needs and style preferences
2️⃣ Consider the cost
🔹 Labor
🔹 Design
🔹 Substructure
🔹 Materials
🔹 Fastening
+ pre-work costs
3️⃣ Determine deck shape and size
To choose size and shape for your deck, you’ll need to consider several factors:
▪️Deck Function
for ex. a low, sprawling deck will suit large gatherings, but might not give you the cozy feel you want for a quiet retreat.
▫️Home architecture style
your deck should complement your home exterior both in size and shape; to keep it simple, a classic rectangle is a good choice for any style of home.
▪️Yard layout
space available in your yard as well as existing features such as landscaping or a patio, pool, or a slope will all affect your deck size and shape.
❗️ be aware larger decks and non-traditional shapes and angles will add costs and complexity to your deck.
Keep your budget and DIY skillset in mind when considering your deck layout 😉
4️⃣ Choose your decking material
Which one is the best? There is no single best material for decks.
➡️ Composite decking such as and is of high quality. It does not require much maintenance and the decks will not warp, crack and discolor.
➡️ The main objection that some people have to composite decking is that they do not like the plastic look and feel. For those clients a premium wood like Ipe would be the best option. Ipe is a low maintenance wood that is extremely durable.
➡️ Typical pressure treated or cedar decks are cheaper, but they do not last very long and require a lot of maintenance (such as oiling every year or so)
