Saint John Tool Library & DIY Workshop

Saint John Tool Library & DIY Workshop NB’s first tool library and DIY workshop to help, teach, and share tools and techniques.

The Saint John Tool Library & DIY Centre is the first piece of the sharing economy in New Brunswick that was founded here. We aim to provide an affordable option to our city to access the tools and space needed for renovations and projects. When we look around the city and see so many old buildings we recognize that our city needs support. We aim to provide that space to borrow basic tools needed

for renovations and landscaping so that we consume less, share more, and revitalize our city. At the tool library you can borrow a range of tools from a wrench to a table saw with over 800 tools in between. Memberships range from 150$ - 450$ depending on what you need access to. Our workshop is a fully equipped woodworking shop and tinker space that allows members to construct a range of products in. We also provide DIY classes on a range of topics each month to help empower people to take on their own projects, train labourers for the construction industry, and fuel DIY hobbyists.

We just wrapped Cohort 2 of Hammers 2 Homes, and we’re proud to be building a new, practical pathway into the construction industry here in Saint John.

This program is different on purpose:

Our close friend Aron Jones at Big Dog Construction Inc. helped shape the curriculum to simplify the deliverables and ensure future employers have clarity in the training outcomes.

NBCC is supporting students with meaningful credentials in various topics which can connect to future training or professional development.

Our Vacant 2 Vibrant projects give real job-site, real-world training that takes place on our affordable housing projects.

The reality is: each year our industry loses more skilled workers than it adds, and traditional trades school isn’t the right fit (or timing) for everyone. At the same time, one of the fastest, most affordable ways to grow housing supply is to turn vacant and derelict buildings into safe, vibrant homes. Hammers 2 Homes helps tackle both. We’re excited to keep building in 2026.

Huge thanks to WorkingNB (Government of New Brunswick) for funding support and for believing in this new approach from our organisation.

Also, a big thank you to Diamondback Toolbelts and Stiletto Tools for helping us deliver a high-quality student experience.

Thank you to ROGERS tv New Brunswick for helping our Vacant 2 Vibrant team raise the profile on our affordable housing work! Every building saved honours the carpenters, plumbers, roofers, and electricians that built and maintained them for a century (in this case) and now they are used to help educate the next generation of trades people and affordably house those in most need.
