Some aggregate applications cover kilometres.
This one might only cover the area surrounding a metal stake. 🏅
Sand and clay are among the materials used to create horseshoe pits.
The game itself could hardly be simpler, which makes the material connection easy to overlook. Players are focused on throwing a horseshoe close to the stake, not thinking about what is underneath it.

Broken concrete can look like the end of a construction material's useful life. It doesn't have to be. 🪨

Concrete contains aggregate that can potentially be recovered instead of discarded.
Once suitable concrete is collected, it can be crushed, processed and prepared for use as recycled aggregate in appropriate construction applications. ♻️ This gives existing material another practical use while reducing the amount of material that needs to be treated as waste.

It's a straightforward idea with significant potential: make better use of resources we already have.

For an industry that supplies the materials used to build communities, responsible resource management also means recognizing opportunities to recover value from materials after their first application is complete. 🏗️

Rehabilitation is easy to notice when new vegetation begins growing. Some of the most interesting changes are much harder to see. 🌱

As a landscape develops, life begins establishing itself at many different levels. Plants grow. Organic material accumulates. Insects arrive. Soil communities become increasingly complex.

Fungi are part of that process. 🍄

They help decompose dead plant material and recycle nutrients back into the soil. Much of this work happens underground through networks that remain completely hidden while the mushrooms we occasionally see provide only a glimpse of the organism below.

Thoughtful rehabilitation is ultimately about creating the conditions for functioning landscapes to develop over time. The return of ecological complexity can happen gradually and often in places most of us never think to look. 🌿

National Mushroom Month is a reminder that there's an entire world beneath our feet contributing to the landscapes we see above them. 🌎

No single person produces a tonne of aggregate. It takes a team. 🪨

Every day, people with different skills and responsibilities work together to keep aggregate operations running safely and efficiently.
One decision can depend on information from several people. Production relies on equipment being maintained. Quality depends on careful testing and attention to specifications. Safe operations require communication, planning and people willing to look out for one another. 👷

That interdependence is one of the strengths of our industry.
The work these teams perform helps supply essential materials for construction and infrastructure across Ontario, but none of it happens without the people who bring their knowledge and experience to work every day. 🏗️

This Labour Day, CBM recognizes our colleagues and workers throughout the aggregate and construction industries.

Thank you for the skill, professionalism and commitment you bring to the job. 🚜

They organize the food drive. Coach the team. Deliver the meals. Clean the trail. Raise the funds. Answer the call when someone needs help. 🤝

Across Ontario, thousands of volunteers and charitable organizations contribute their time, expertise and resources to making life better for the people around them.

Much of that work happens quietly.
A stocked food bank can help a family through a difficult month. 🥫 A youth program can give someone confidence and belonging. A volunteer group can help protect a natural space that an entire community enjoys. 🌳

Individual acts of generosity may seem small on their own, but their collective impact can be extraordinary.
On International Day of Charity, CBM recognizes the charities, volunteers and community organizations whose commitment makes the places we serve stronger.

The most recognizable part of a skyscraper is usually what we can see. Some of its most important materials are hidden beneath it. 🏙️

Tall buildings place immense loads on the ground below, making carefully engineered foundations critical to their construction.

Concrete provides much of the strength these foundations and structures require, with sand and stone serving as essential ingredients. 🪨 These materials help create durable structural components capable of supporting buildings designed to stand for decades.

The aggregate story doesn't stop at the building's entrance. Streets, sidewalks, drainage systems and surrounding public infrastructure also depend on aggregate materials. 🚧

That's an interesting contrast. We recognize skyscrapers by their height, architecture and glass facades, yet many of the materials making those landmarks possible are rarely noticed at all. 🏗️

The next time you stand on an artificial turf field, look between the green fibres. 🏟️

You may find sand.

Silica sand is used as an infill material in many synthetic turf systems. It sits within the artificial fibres as part of the installed field system.

There is something interesting about that combination: an intentionally synthetic grass surface incorporating one of the most familiar natural granular materials.

Most of the time, we talk about what aggregate helps us build.

This time, the aggregate is the composition. 🧹

Japanese dry landscape gardens use stone and carefully raked gravel to create deliberately arranged landscapes. The patterns in the gravel can suggest movement and are maintained as part of the garden.

No concrete needs to cover it. No asphalt hides it.

The texture, lines and stone are what visitors came to see.

It is a completely different way of thinking about a material we encounter every day. 🪨

Curlers call it a rock for a very good reason. 🇨🇦

Curling stones are made from granite.

That makes curling a particularly interesting example for this series because the mineral material is not building the arena or sitting underneath the athletes.

It is the sporting equipment.
Players spend the entire game sliding granite down a sheet of ice with remarkable accuracy, and Canadians have been watching it happen for generations.
Sometimes the most unusual uses of stone are also the most familiar. 🎯
