Crunch. Step. Scrape.

Three sounds can tell your brain that a character is walking across gravel before you even look at the screen. 🎞️
Creating that effect convincingly is part of Foley work.

Foley artists recreate everyday physical sounds and synchronize them with filmed action.

Footsteps are especially dependent on material.

A shoe moving across carpet sounds nothing like the same shoe moving across gravel.That means real gravel and stone can become useful sound-production surfaces.

The performer watches the scene, matches the movement and physically creates the sound that will accompany the final image.

The character may be kilometres away in the story.The footsteps may have been recorded much later in a studio.

What reaches the audience is a seamless combination of picture and sound.

Aggregate does not appear in the credits.
But there is a good chance you've heard it perform.

Next time you watch a movie, pay attention to the surfaces you can identify without looking at them.

Here's a statistic that adds useful context to conversations about aggregate and agricultural land. 🌾

Among 701 rehabilitated aggregate sites studied, 21% had agriculture as their predominant subsequent use, according to research highlighted by Ontario Stone, Sand & Gravel Association.📊
That represents more than one in every five properties examined. 🚜

When rehabilitation is planned for agricultural use, the land can have another productive purpose following extraction. 🌱

Why can't an aggregate operation simply be moved somewhere more convenient? 📍

Geology is a big part of the answer. 🪨
Ontario Stone, Sand & Gravel Association explains that sand and gravel pits occur where glaciers deposited suitable stone and sand thousands of years ago. 🧊

Communities can decide where to build, but the resources required for construction exist where geological processes placed them. 🗺️

Were you aware of this connection between Ontario's glacial history and today's construction materials? 🤔

A demolished structure may be finished. Some of its materials may not be. 🧱

When suitable concrete is recovered, crushed and processed, aggregate can potentially be used again in appropriate construction applications.

Not every material is suitable for every application. Performance requirements still matter. 🚜

Before something becomes waste, it's worth considering whether the resources inside it still have another useful life.
