"When we asked Dynamic if they could supply a 20-foot-tall door with 20-foot-tall sidelights, they said, 'No problem.' When we added 12-foot-tall curved glass and low iron, they said, 'Sure, we can do that too.'"
— Jason Smith, Smitharc Architects, Dallas

The remarkable part was not the yes. It was making that yes buildable.

Hundreds of windows had to be coordinated into structural steel with very little tolerance, within a a compressed delivery and installation schedule. Curved low-iron glass added another layer of precision, where clarity, geometry, and optical quality all had to be carefully controlled.

After completion, Jason summarized the outcome simply: not a single window didn’t fit.

Scale is easy to draw. Precision at scale is tested on site, one opening at a time.

That is where the work proves itself.

A question architects return to more than almost any other: size.

How tall can the door be? How far can the panel run? Can the glass turn a corner without a post?

The honest answer is that an oversized opening is never limited by one thing. It's limited by whichever of five constraints arrives first.

1. Structure. Deflection at the head, more often than the frame itself, sets the real ceiling. If the opening is drawn before the header is engineered, the header wins.

2. Glass. Lite size, weight, low-iron availability and tempering and laminating capacity all have limits. Those limits are set at the float line, not on the drawing.

3. Thermal. More glass asks the frame and the insulated unit to work harder to hold the performance that the code and the client expect.

4. Operation. A panel that weighs as much as a small car still has to move the way a door should.

5. The last mile. Crating, crane picks, site access and installation tolerance. The largest lite is only as large as the route to the opening.

None of these is a reason to shrink the idea, but each one is a reason to bring fenestration into the conversation before the structure is fixed.

That's what design-assist is for. We solve before we fabricate.

"A Kynar finish spec on any of our window systems is always, to me, the benchmark. It's the gold standard." — Eric De Witt, Principal, Lucid Architecture

At Northshore Residence, the finish did more than protect the frames. Its job was to keep the fenestration visually quiet.

Lucid chose Dynamic's Alumin-Arte system because it has the slender sightlines of a steel window, plus thermal breaks and a Kynar® PVDF finish. On an exposed Lake Michigan shoreline, De Witt explains, that combination solves a problem steel can't: "A break or scratch in a steel finish can go unnoticed for years before it surfaces as a maintenance problem. A Kynar-finished aluminum system removes that liability from the equation almost entirely."

A restrained palette needs a finish that stays consistent for decades.

When an issue arises on site, the question is not only who is responsible. It is who stays engaged long enough to resolve it.

At Dynamic, involvement continues across the fenestration scope from early design and engineering through fabrication, delivery, and installation.

Site conditions rarely fit neatly into one phase or one role. Different people may be involved at different stages, but the responsibility to stay engaged does not disappear with the handoff.

That is what accountability means across a project.

85% of the façade was glass. The brief was for it to disappear.

When Jay Hamilton, one of Dynamic's Navigators, worked with Eric De Witt, Principal at Lucid Architecture, that tension shaped the project from early design through completion. "It wasn't about selecting a window product but more about understanding what the architecture was asking the fenestration to do."

The conversations that shaped the project happened before anything was specified.

"That kind of dialogue allowed us to find solutions that supported the design rather than asking the architecture to compromise around the product."

A year after move-in, Jay measures success by how people live in the house: "When people move in to that space, you realize that the work isn't really about the window itself. It's about the experiences the architecture makes possible."

On Lake Michigan, the real design review doesn't happen in the studio. It happens in October.

Fall fronts sweep in from the north with sustained winds of 50+ mph (80 kmh) for 12 to 24 hours at a time. "That's really when you see how good a job you've done," says Eric De Witt, Principal at Lucid Architecture

At Northshore Residence in Saugatuck, about 85% of the lake-facing façade is glass. Now that the house has been through a full Great Lakes year, De Witt's verdict is simple: "We made it through the winter, so the building envelope was fully tested by the exact conditions the design was meant to withstand.”

Lucid had never designed a home quite like this one. "We needed a fenestration supplier who was willing to stand there with us, be a partner, and help us solve those problems."

One geometry. Three different decisions. Bronze, steel, aluminum.

Within the Arte system, sightline and reveal stay fixed across all three metals. So when you are engaged in the material conversation, you don’t need to redraw the elevation, because you can test the same proportion against a different alloy.

The Arte Metal 3D Configurator lets you run that test before it happens on paper. Set your sightline. Move between bronze, steel, and aluminum. See how frame depth, mullion width, and reveal actually read against your openings. Then bring it into Revit. It won't spec a coating or price a run. It will show you whether the material question in front of you is really a material decision, or a proportion problem still looking for an answer.

We don't think of fenestration as a category to compare. It's a decision to steward. And the earlier you can see how that decision behaves, the fewer surprises you’ll encounter during construction.

Does anodizing an aluminum fenestration system eliminate the risk of corrosion?

Not entirely.

Anodizing hardens the surface, but corrosion can still initiate at cut edges or joints, and degradation can migrate beneath the anodized layer while the surface still looks intact. That's the part that catches people off guard: the finish can look fine for years while the substrate underneath is already compromised.

That's why Aluminum-Arte defaults to welded construction, enclosed extrusion ends, and a high-performance AAMA 2605 coating system through Kynar Aquatec PVDF.

Finish isn't a cosmetic layer. It's part of the material decision.

Questions about coating performance or corrosion resistance can be directed to one of our Navigators.

Architecture at its most enduring is not spectacle. It’s precision, restraint, and permanence.

It’s bronze that develops a dignified patina. It’s steel that reads as shadow against glass. It’s wood that honors its natural grain. It’s glass that governs the relationship between interior and landscape.

Materials are not decoration. They are the language of architecture.

For more than three decades, we’ve engineered fenestration around architectural intent, with performance, environmental exposure, and material behavior considered from the beginning.

Each system is developed according to the architectural and technical conditions it is meant to serve.

Because in high-craftsmanship architecture, longevity is a form of respect. And fenestration is never simply a component. It is an architectural expression of intent.

Design intent shouldn't wait for construction documents to be tested.

The Arte Metal 3D Configurator lets architects explore bronze, steel, and aluminum systems while proportion, sightline, and elevation rhythm are still fluid.

Understand the sightline and frame geometry. View the assembled unit, explore finish options, and use AR to consider the system in an architectural context. Then bring the configuration into Revit for documentation that matches what you designed, rather than a compromise of it.

It's not a pricing tool. Nor is it a product picker. It is a way to understand the system more fully before those decisions harden into documentation.

Fenestration is architectural language, not building material. This is a tool for architects who treat it that way.
