With a double door, you don't open both every day. One side does the daily work; the other stays shut until the new sofa arrives or you want the whole entry open.

That's the practical part. The other part is the wood. We use flat cuts, which bring out the natural grain across a wide, two-door entrance.

Natural Resources Canada's "Keeping the Heat In" walks through where a house loses heat. There's a full section on windows and doors and another on sealing air leaks.

If your front hall gets drafty come November, read those two first. Save this for a quiet weekend.

Natural wood is having a moment on front doors. A January piece from Hunker reports designers expect wood tones and visible grain to be everywhere in 2026.

Stain is what makes that look work. It adds colour while letting the grain show through, and on solid wood, every door's grain is a little different.

Ever wondered what's actually inside the glass of an exterior door?

On our exterior glass doors, it's a 1" sealed, double-glazed, tempered thermal unit: two panes, each 6 mm thick, built to reduce heat transfer through the glass. The solid wood around it adds insulation of its own.
