“Milk is Mother Nature’s superfood. The work that our farmers are doing – even though so many times they aren’t appreciated – is a great service for our nation,” said Dale Beaty who should know after years of service in the Army and growing up on his grandparents' farm. Beaty serves as director of member relations at Edge Dairy Farmer Cooperative and Dairy Business Association and has a lot to share in the latest Progressive Dairy article written by me (Amy Throndsen)!

Dale Beaty served seven years active duty as an Army officer and Army Ranger, retiring as an Army captain.

Walt and Austin, Royal Family Farming, talk about the challenges dairy farmers face and how Austin has implemented new ways of overcoming these challenges by using worms to process wastewater on his dairy (BioFiltro) to establishing a direct-to-consumer beef brand, Royal Prime Protein. Austin has systems in place to reduce carbon emissions and track the data on his farm in a way that he can then transform the data into information that his customers care more about.

Check out the World Dairy Expo Virtual Tour with Austin Allred, Royal Family Farming. Austin explains how BioFiltro 's worm-powered wastewater system removes 90%-99% of the nutrients from his green water, builds soil by generating worm castings, and produces 6-8 carbon credits per milking cow.

Austin explains how they worked to improve the efficiencies of the system over the last 6 years, why the volume of compost bedding (80 tons/day) created a problem for the system and the solution he found. He and his team researched and visited farms with DCC Waterbeds prior to making his decision to switch.

DCC Waterbeds were installed in the free stall barns in August of 2021 to provide low-maintenance cow comfort that allows for a cleaner, simpler manure waste stream. The farm has transitioned about half of the stalls, and, Austin said, “with the waterbeds we have in, we’re using about 75% less bedding at this point.” He also commented that “within a few hours our cows were laying on those beds.”
