Changshu Garments Town, named Changshu Zhaoshang Town before October 2007, was built in May 1985. After 30 years’ development, construction, building-up, and management, it has grown from a roadside market into an specialized international market for garments and accessories and has ranked itself one of the thirty-five Key Markets in China (the first batch). Since 2007, its subsidiary units have been granted titles of China Men’s Garments Center, China Women’s Garments Center, China Children’s Garments Center, and China Shoes Center by China National Textile and Apparel Council (CNTAC) and China General Chamber of Commerce (CGCC). It also has been approved as a 4A tourist shopping center. In recent years, the Town has won many glorious accolades, including “A Model Unit in the National Textile Industry”from Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security (MOHRSS) of the People’s Republic of China and CNTAC in 2010, “A National Model Honest Market”from State Administration for Industry & Commerce of the People’s Republic of China in June 2012, and “A Garment Brand Incubator of China”from the Circulation Department of CNTAC and China National Garment Association (CNGA)in November 2014.
Changshu Garments Town is comprised of seven state owned units of Men’s Garments Center, Zhaoshang Town, Shoes Center, East China Textile Center, E-commerce Park, Petty Commodities Market, and Children’s Garments Center, which control subordinate units of export garments distribution centers, property management companies, Futong Logistics, tourist service companies, and so on, and over 20 private markets, such as Tianhong Garments Center, World Garments Center, International Garments Center, Wanhao International Textile Center, Leather Town, Jiulong Market, Laopin Town and so on. Till now the Town has acquired commodity categories of garments, knitwear, cloth, decorative fabrics, bedding, petty commodities, shoes, hardware, etc. Now the Town administers an acreage of 3.71 km², of which the business section takes 3.5 km² where over 30,000 stores or stalls and over 100,000 people from all over China are doing business. In a busy season, the visitor flow rate here would reach 300,000 a day, with goods transported approaching 1 million ton and capital flow exceeding 2 billion RMB a day. For many successive years, its volume of transaction has exceeded 100 billion RMB a year, and it reached 131.27 billion RMB in 2015.
Changshu Garments Town makes the south part of Changshu city, with Shanghai lying to its east, Suzhou to its south, Wuxi to its west, and Nantong to its north. It enjoys a convenient transportation network. Passengers or cargo can reach over 1,000 cities in China from here by direct main lines. Financial institutions have set up over 40 outlets in the Town which offer ready service of nationwide electronic transfer of funds. Other facilities and services provided include more than 20 large parking lots, roof top or underground, safe and comfortable hotels and restaurants, and functional services of market supervision, city management, patrol, traffic police, transportation, stowage, national tax, local tax, inspection, fire fighting,and public hygiene. The Administrative Commission of Changshu Garments Town, a subordinate agency of Changshu government, is the direct administrative body of the Town and is in charge of comprehensive coordination of its management.
