A steel coil survives the voyage or rusts on it, and the packing decides which.

What to require from any supplier shipping coils by sea:

Edge protection on every coil edge, so the strapping cannot cut through the wrap.
A moisture barrier rather than a single plastic sheet, with desiccant inside the container on long voyages.
Steel strapping and lashing to the container floor, with timber dunnage against the side walls.
Eye-to-sky or eye-to-wall, agreed in writing and photographed, so the coils cannot shift in heavy weather.
No direct contact between bare steel and the container floor.
Container photos at sealing, for the insurance file if a claim ever happens.

If you buy on FOB terms, the packing specification still belongs in the contract. The cargo is yours the moment it is on board.

What we check on your coil before it goes into the container.

Coating mass. The zinc is measured, not taken on the mill's word. It is the number buyers dispute most often at destination.
Measured thickness. A micrometre reading across the width, checked against the tolerance in the purchase order.
Coil dimensions. Inner and outer diameter, width and actual weight, recorded per coil rather than per lot.
Surface. Spangle uniformity, oiling, edge condition, and the first sign of white rust.
Documents. The mill test certificate matched to the heat number, and packing list weight matched to the weighbridge ticket.

Inspection happens on site with our own instruments, and the photos and readings can reach you before the container is sealed.

Ask for the pre-shipment report on your next order, even if it is the first one.

Color-coated steel for roofs and sandwich panels, in RAL colours.

Base: galvanized or galvalume, with Z41 to Z60 coating on the roofing profiles
Paint: polyester or SMP top coat, 20 to 25 microns
Profile: corrugated and trapezoidal, with hidden fastener options
Also available: flat colour coil for sandwich panel lines and roll forming

Two decisions worth making early: the colour code, and whether the panels are exposed on both faces. Changing the back coat moves the price more than changing the colour does.

The steel arrives in good condition, then sits at the port over paperwork. Here is the document set worth settling before you book.

Mill test certificate. Ask for EN 10204 3.1, with heat number, chemical composition and mechanical results, traceable to the coil.
Commercial invoice and packing list. Coil number, actual weight, dimensions per coil rather than per container.
Bill of lading. Check the consignee spelling and that the description matches your import licence.
Certificate of origin. Your duty depends on it wherever a trade agreement applies.
Destination conformity. Saudi Arabia, Thailand and several other markets run their own schemes, and the certificate has to be issued before shipment, not after arrival.

Send the destination country with your enquiry, and we confirm at quotation stage which certificates the mill issues for that market.

Four standard names turn up on Asian galvanized coil. They are not interchangeable, and your purchase order should say which one you want.

GB/T 2518. The Chinese national standard. Grade DX51D+Z and its neighbours.
JIS G3302. The Japanese industrial standard. SGCC is the grade most buyers write.
ASTM A653. The US standard. Look for CS Type B together with a G coating designation.
EN 10346. The European standard. DX51D+Z, and probably the one your engineer has in mind.

For ordinary roofing and ducting, SGCC and DX51D+Z get you to the same place. The difference bites on mechanical properties, where a structure or a drawing specifies yield strength and elongation.

Practical advice: put the standard, the grade, the coating designation and the measured thickness range on one line of the purchase order, and attach a tolerance clause. It saves the argument at the destination port, after the container is already on the quay.

Color-coated steel fails from the paint before it fails from the steel. The resin on top is what you are choosing.

Polyester (PE). The everyday choice for roofing, wall panels and general use. Lowest cost of the three and fine in ordinary inland climate.
Silicon-modified polyester (SMP). Holds gloss longer under strong sun. Common in the Gulf and North Africa, where UV is the main enemy.
PVDF (fluorocarbon). Coating systems for coastal plants, chemical sites, and projects that call for a long warranty.

Two numbers worth writing into the purchase order: top coat film thickness (25 microns is the usual project grade, 20 microns the economy grade) and back coat (5 to 7 microns is typical).

The substrate underneath matters just as much. Color-coated on a Z120 base does not behave like color-coated on a Z275 base.

Tell us where it is going, and we spec the paint system, the film thickness and the base coating together.

ورقمان يستحقان أن يُكتبا في أمر الشراء: سماكة الطبقة العلوية (25 ميكرومتر هي درجة المشاريع المعتادة، و20 ميكرومتر الدرجة الاقتصادية)، وسماكة الطبقة الخلفية (من 5 إلى 7 ميكرومتر عادة).

والقاعدة المعدنية تحته لا تقل أهمية: فولاذ مطلي على أساس Z120 لا يتصرف أبداً كفولاذ مطلي على أساس Z275.

You can estimate a coil's weight in fifteen seconds, before anyone puts it on a scale.

Weight in tonnes = (OD squared minus ID squared) x 0.7854 x width x 7.85

OD, ID and width in metres. 7.85 is the density of steel in tonnes per cubic metre.

A coil 1.25 m wide, 1500 mm outer diameter, 508 mm inner diameter:
(1.5 squared minus 0.508 squared) x 0.7854 x 1.25 x 7.85 = about 15.4 tonnes.

Use it to check a packing list, to plan loading, or to catch a quotation that quietly assumes a different coil size.
