For a recent automotive overmolding project, the customer provided the metal inserts and asked us to develop the rubber tooling and overmolded parts.

At first, it looked straightforward.

But before quotation, several technical points needed to be clarified:

• How should the rubber connect with the metal insert?
• How should the insert be positioned in the mold?
• Where could flash potentially occur?
• Which areas are functionally critical?
• What can realistically be controlled during molding?

These details can affect mold design, tooling cost, and production requirements.

So we discussed the manufacturing considerations with the customer before finalizing the quotation.

The goal was simple:

Fewer assumptions.
Clearer requirements.
Fewer surprises later.

For overmolded components, the quotation is often only the beginning of the engineering conversation.

How Suppliers Control Dimensional Consistency
