Why Chromium Makes Steel “Stainless”. 💡

Corrosion resistance in steels improves significantly with chromium additions.

When chromium dissolves in steel, it forms a thin, invisible passive film of chromium oxide — a natural barrier that prevents further corrosion.

Without this film, rust (iron oxide, Fe₂O₃) forms, flakes off, and corrosion continues.

More free chromium means a stronger, more complete protective layer — and longer-lasting performance.

There’s no single point where steel suddenly becomes “stainless,” but studies show:

🔍 Around 12% Cr → almost zero weight loss, only minimal rusting or pitting

🔎 Around 18% Cr → virtually no rust, easily removed with soap and water

For precision woodworking tools, this chemistry matters.

In addition to peeling knives (lathe knives) for veneer production, we also provide 3 types of components for plywood production lines:

Installing the pressure bar on the machine is usually a complex process. To reduce downtime, our pressure bars are made of a special solid high-chromium alloy tool steel.

The key advantage of this solid high-chromium alloy steel lies in its exceptional resistance to tannic acid, one of the main causes of rapid wear in traditional tool steels. By using this high-alloy steel throughout, we ensure a consistent thermal expansion coefficient, preventing bending or deformation. This also provides a wider effective working width and longer service life. 😉

Optimal settings are determined by a range of conditions and parameters including lathe capacity,species, log size, log quality, wood density, grain structure,speed of production and actual veneer quality requirements (including target thickness and acceptable thickness tolerance).

The most common materials used for making knives include carbon steel, low-alloy tool steel, and high-alloy tool steel. These steels are typically used in traditional folding knives as well as some production fixed blades.

Carbon steel primarily contains carbon, with small additions of manganese or silicon. Low-alloy tool steels incorporate minor amounts of alloying elements to improve hardenability, which allows them to harden more effectively in oil than in water. Water, being a very aggressive quenching medium, often causes warping or cracking. Some of these steels also include vanadium or tungsten to enhance wear resistance.

In general, high-carbon steels offer better edge retention but lower toughness. Their maximum edge retention is not exceptionally high, since most of their wear resistance comes from iron carbide (cementite), which is the softest among the various carbide types. On the positive side, these steels are easy to grind.

For large knives that demand exceptional toughness—our specialty, particularly the 5,500 mm long knives we produce for the veneer industry—we select high-alloy tool steels.

The key performance difference compared to low-alloy steels lies in their harder carbide structures. Vanadium carbide is among the hardest known carbides in steel, while chromium carbide falls between iron carbide and vanadium carbide. These carbides provide steels with outstanding edge retention while maintaining excellent toughness.
