July Meteor Showers in the Dominican Republic: A Double Celestial Show!
Over the next few nights, the Dominican Republic will witness a double meteor shower: Southern Delta Aquariids and Alpha Capricornids will peak on the night of July 30–31, but meteors will continue for several nights!
📍 Southern Delta Aquariids
Radiant near star Skat (δ Aquarii), almost overhead from the island
Parent comet: 96P/Machholz
💥 Up to 25 meteors per hour under clear skies
⏰ Best time: after midnight, once the Moon has set
🌌 Meteors will streak across the southern sky but can appear anywhere
📍 Alpha Capricornids
Radiant near Algedi (α Capricorni), also high in Dominican skies
Parent comet: 169P/NEAT
🌟 Less frequent but produce slow, bright fireballs — sky fireworks!
👀 Just look up and take in the whole sky — especially the southern half
💬 Fun fact: both showers radiate from a similar sky region, so meteors may appear to intertwine!
🌠 Don’t forget the Perseids
Peak: August 12–13, but already active
🔥 Up to 150 meteors per hour — fast, bright, with long trails
🌖 This year, the peak aligns with an almost full Moon, so early August offers better viewing
Radiant in Perseus, low in the northeast, but longest meteors often streak across the southern sky
📌 Observation tips:
Escape city lights
Allow 20–30 minutes for your eyes to adjust
Lie down and scan the sky — the magic will come to you!
