How to combine design and safety?

This was the challenge Puumerkki, a Finnish building material supplier, faced when designing the emergency stairwell walls at their new premises.

The solution: UPM’s WISA®-Spruce FR, a fire-retardant plywood that enabled the desired finish without the need for a complex multi-layered structure.

Discover how WISA®-Spruce FR can combine design and safety!

The fire-retardant WISA-Spruce FR provided a safe base for striking wood paneling. With a traditional solution the desired finish wouldn't have been possible.

New EU safety rules, same UPM commitment ✨

The EU’s new General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR) becomes effective at the end of 2024, but at UPM, product safety and quality have always been prioritized.

Every WISA plywood product is made from sustainably sourced wood while adhesives and chemicals are thoroughly tested before use. And we support our customers throughout the full product lifecycle.

“When it comes to product safety, it’s always important to consult a professional if something is unclear,” reminds Sami Uuksulainen, UPM Plywood’s Product Management and Development Director.

The historic boathouse on Myllysaari Island in Lahti, Finland, has found new purpose as a summer event venue following its recent renovation. 🙌

The new floor, built with WISA®-Wire plywood donated by UPM, was installed by students from Salpaus Further Education under professional guidance. The 30 mm plywood supports heavy boats in winter and offers a safe surface for summer events – all while respecting the original architecture.

Thanks to UPM’s Share and Care program, this project brought together education, local community support and cultural heritage. Discover how this collaboration brings new life to Myllysaari 👇
