[INSPIRATION]

This building brings together architectural innovation, engineering expertise and cultural heritage in a striking contemporary form. Advanced technologies meet traditional craftsmanship, creating a dialogue between the past and the future.

Arabic culture is embedded into the architecture itself. The façade features quotations from His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, transformed into an architectural language through the distinctive calligraphy of Mattar bin Lahej.

Its unconventional form also challenges the familiar model of the high-rise tower. Instead, the circular structure offers a powerful architectural metaphor: the building represents humanity, the green mound beneath it evokes the Earth, and the central void symbolises the possibilities and uncertainties of the future.

The Piraeus Tower is a landmark building marking the gateway to the new Athenian Riviera, rising at the heart of one of Europe’s busiest passenger ports. Standing 88 metres tall across 22 floors, it is Greece’s first high-rise building to combine green and digital technologies.

The history of the tower goes back to 1968, when a decree issued under the military dictatorship raised the permitted building height to 24 floors. Construction began in 1972, with the ambition of creating a new Maritime Trade Centre. Although the building’s structural frame was completed in 1974, only the first three floors were ever occupied.

For decades, the tower stood unfinished and largely unused, earning it the nickname of a “sleeping giant” among locals. Today, its transformation has given this long-dormant landmark a new lease of life.

On this international day celebrating architecture, we’d like to highlight the outstanding work presented by our winners during the 2026 Edition of the Saint-Gobain Architecture Student Contest in Belgrade.

In response to the urban and environmental specificities of the site in Serbia, the 2026 finalists developed a range of thoughtful architectural solutions. Their proposals demonstrate a strong understanding of sustainable construction principles, thermal performance and contextual integration.

From initial concept to construction feasibility, this retrospective showcases projects that successfully combine typological ambition, user wellbeing and material efficiency.

[INSPIRATION] Located on a disused quay built in the 1920s, the FENIX museum pays tribute to the millions of migrants who arrived in the Netherlands between the 19th and 20th centuries.

This futuristic museum, with its radical design, features a double-helix staircase – nicknamed ‘Tornado’ – which rises from the roof to a observation deck overlooking the city. This monumental stainless-steel spiral embodies the perpetual movement of travel, exile and return.

The historic red-brick building has been fully preserved, while the contemporary glass-and-metal structure is superimposed upon it, like a vessel docked at the quay.

Museum Paleis Het Loo is a historic palace and museum. Originally built in the 17th century for Stadtholder William III of Orange-Nassau, this former royal residence remained in use as a royal palace until 1975. Today, the museum offers a rich insight into Dutch history, art and royal heritage.

Following its latest renovation, carried out between 2018 and 2023, new exhibition halls and spaces were added. According to the Prix Versailles, Het Loo, with its stunning palace gardens, is one of the most beautiful museums in Europe.

Renovating and transforming a historic monument of this scale presented a major challenge, requiring flawless finishes on high walls and ceilings, precise measurements and meticulous attention to numerous complex details.

[INSPIRATION] Situated in the historic centre of Porto, the Lello bookshop is almost… spellbinding!

This house-turned-bookshop is regarded as one of the most beautiful and oldest historic bookshops in the world. It has even been designated a National Monument of Portugal since 2026, and has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996, alongside the historic centre of Porto.

Rebuilt by Francisco Xavier Esteves at the request of brothers José and António Lello, the current bookshop was inaugurated on January 13th 1906.

Its white façade features both Neo-Gothic and Art Nouveau elements.

Inside, carved wood panelling covers the space from floor to ceiling. At its centre, a double flight of staircases running in opposite directions provides access to the upper galleries. The whole space is lit by a glass roof decorated with the bookshop’s Latin motto: Decus in Labore, ‘dignity in work’.
