This is a heads up to small businesses, well, any business really.
I have just had £1634.33 taken from my bank because of a chargeback claim.
A call came through from a new customer, I took all security questions and received the money before I delivered the good 30 miles for the customer. 1 month later a claim has been made against the transaction saying it wasn't authorised and the payment taken from me within a week.
I have recorded calls that prove that it was authorised but as it was a new customer, I have no idea if the call came from the card holder or a scammer who cloned the card.
Either way, even with evidence to back me up, I am out of pocket.
I have reported this to the police, spoken to my bank and my insurance company.
The money may come back to me, it might not, either way, it can take up to 45 days to resolve.
I appreciate that there are potentially 2 innocent parties here, but only 1 of them seems to be protected and from where I'm standing, it isn't the business owner.
We now won't be taking card payments over the phone from new customers, yes it might protect me from future fraud, but it also might limit the number of new customers I can attract.
The message really is to share my experience in the hope that it protects anyone else from falling for absolute scumbags who just want to rip you off.
