Most strip sealant failures come down to just four avoidable issues.

And when they’re overlooked, airtightness and weathertightness can be compromised long before the building is in service.

Here are the four problems we see most often on site:
1. Incorrect size or profile
The wrong dimension prevents full compression — and that means reduced performance.
2. Incorrect installation position
Sealants must follow the crown and trough exactly, with no stretching, and only on clean, dry substrates.
3. Incorrect grade of sealant
Always confirm the product meets system requirements, including NFRC Class A where specified.
4. Installation temperature
Most strip sealants should be installed between 5°C and 40°C to achieve proper compression and long term reliability.

NFRC TB36 in plain English: what it means for your laps

You’ve probably been asked:
“Is your sealant compliant with NFRC TB36?”
But what does that actually mean for you on site?

NFRC Technical Bulletin 36 sets the performance standards for butyl strip sealants in metal buildings. It classifies products into:
• Class A – high performance
• Class B – minimum performance

The testing covers adhesion, creep, water resistance, compression and long term durability. For metal roofing and cladding, Class A is widely treated as the standard to aim for, especially where airtightness, weathertightness and long service life are required.

Why it matters to contractors:
• Easier sign off with main contractors and consultants
• Fewer disputes over “fit for purpose” if there’s a problem later
• You can point to an objective standard, not just “we’ve always used this”
