With World Day for Safety and Health at Work approaching it is a good moment to remember Workplace safety is not just a box to tick, it is what keeps people safe and operations moving.

In the workplace, risks are constant, from vehicle movements to slips, trips, and daily wear on infrastructure. Slips and trips alone make up around a third of UK workplace injuries, and cost over £500m per year.

The right safety equipment reduces risk, improves efficiency, protects your workforce, and supports compliance.

Extreme environments do not allow for failure.

From aerospace to chemical processing, the right sealing solution can be the difference between high performance, critical failure, and costly downtime.

FFKM (Perfluoroelastomer) O-rings are engineered to withstand:
Extreme temperatures
Aggressive chemicals
The most demanding operating conditions

In which applications do they provide a clear performance advantage?

Have you ever wondered what protects your drinking water.

It’s not just filtration and testing, it is the hidden materials inside valves, seals, gaskets and fittings that can make the difference between safe water and contamination.

That’s where WRAS approval comes in.

It ensures materials used in drinking water systems do not leach harmful substances or compromise water quality, protecting public health, project compliance, and long-term system performance.

So what does WRAS approval actually involve? And how does it compare globally?

We are often asked: what’s the difference between a gasket, a seal, and an O-ring?

At first glance, they might look the same, but understanding the distinctions ensures you choose the right sealing solution for your application.

From stopping leaks to keeping contaminants out, each plays a unique role in protecting your systems. Learn when to use a gasket vs a seal vs an O-ring and how to select the right material. Choosing the wrong one can compromise performance, safety, and efficiency.

For example:
Gaskets: Seal static joints and irregular surfaces, ideal for flanges, pumps, and HVAC systems.

Seals: Designed for dynamic applications where movement occurs, keeping fluids or gases contained.

O-rings: Compact, versatile rings that provide reliable sealing in both static and dynamic conditions.

Material matters too. Rubber, metal, graphite, PTFE, choosing the right one ensures your system performs under the correct temperature, pressure, and chemical conditions.

Don’t Let a Small Seal Cause a Big Problem: The O-Ring Failure Guide

O-rings are one of those components you rarely think about until something goes wrong. They are small, inexpensive, and easy to overlook, but when they fail, the consequences can be serious. From costly downtime to safety risks, a single failed O-ring can halt production, damage equipment, or even put people at risk.

That’s why understanding what causes O-rings to fail is so important.

The Polymax O-Ring Failure Guide is a simple practical guide designed to give engineers, technicians, and maintenance teams a clear, practical resource to diagnose seal failures and prevent them from happening again.

What will you learn in the guide?

The guide breaks down the most common causes of O-ring failure and shows you what to look for:

Chemical attack: When the wrong material meets the wrong medium
Thermal damage: Heat, cold, or cycling extremes
Mechanical issues: Extrusion, abrasion, or installation damage
Design flaws: Incorrect groove dimensions, compression problems, or poor elastomer choice

The Polymax O-Ring Failure Guide is a practical tool to help you make better material selections, improve system design, and keep your operations running smoothly.

Polymax Awarded WRAS Approval

We are pleased to announce that Polymax EPDM O-rings have officially received WRAS (Water Regulations Advisory Scheme) approval, a mark of quality that guarantees compliance with UK water regulations.

With Polymax WRAS approved EPDM O-rings, customers can have complete confidence that they are using high-quality, reliable products that meet stringent regulatory standards and perform consistently in every application.

Our WRAS approved EPDM O-rings offer:
Suitability for Drinking Water Systems: The primary benefit is that WRAS approval certifies that a non-metallic product is suitable for contact with drinking water, in compliance with standard BS 6920-1 / 2000.

This makes them ideal for use in drinking water applications, such as water supply pipes and plumbing fixtures.
Compliance with UK Regulations: WRAS is the standard used in Great Britain for this purpose. Using WRAS-approved components helps ensure compliance with UK water regulations.

Assured Water Quality: The testing process for WRAS approval ensures that the elastomer materials do not impair the quality of the water they come into contact with. This includes verifying that the material does not:
Promote the growth of bacteria
Affect the water's colour or appearance
Impart any unpleasant taste to the water

This milestone reinforces Polymax’s commitment to bringing valuable solutions to the market, in particular where compliance and safety are paramount.

Shaking Up the Standard: Polymax Delivers Custom Vibration Mounts for Extreme Environments

When a leading global manufacturer of heavy-duty vibrating screens needed a replacement Anti-Vibration mount for a high-impact screening machine operating in extreme conditions in India, a simple like-for-like swap was not enough.

The Challenge:

High ambient temperatures and continuous vibration causing rubber to reach nearly 70°C.
Premature mount failures under extreme heat and mechanical stress.
Need for a durable, high-performance solution that could withstand harsh conditions.

Our Approach: Custom Design & Rigorous Testing

Instead of simply reproducing the component, we collaborated closely with the equipment manufacturer and operator to develop a custom elastomer rubber compound designed specifically for:
High heat resistance
Superior vibration damping

We subjected the new mount to:
Extended mechanical durability testing
Thermal simulations replicating the site’s harsh conditions
Vibration isolation performance assessments

The mount passed the rigorous testing programme, proving it could handle the demanding environment.

On-site Success
Installed on-site in India, the custom mount:

Delivered consistent performance despite 5mm vibration amplitude at 1035 rpm
Ensured smooth operation with no vibration issues
Provided a direct fit for hassle-free installation

Since installation, the screening machine has operated continuously at full load with zero failures, delighting both the manufacturer and operator.

This project highlights how collaboration and tailored engineering can solve complex challenges, delivering not just a fix but a long-term performance upgrade. The custom mount improved equipment durability and ensured smooth operation in the toughest conditions.
