One week ago before the pasture turned to a desert 🏜️

We had a fab Scythe Course at Fairhill Farm

Our course participants learnt the how’s & why’s of setting up their scythes for different types of mowing… and what happens when your hafting angle goes ‘wrong’ (!!)

They practiced and honed their mowing technique on different types of grass and vegetation.

Brushed up their skills on jig & free hand peening to keep their blades sharp and effective.

Discovered how to manage their grassland and make hay by hand, even when the weather is inclement!

We enjoyed good company, plenty of sunshine and delicious farm food including a Hay Makers BBQ Brekkie on Day 2.

Would you like to come and learn to scythe with us?

We’re planning another course in September, so if you’re keen get in touch and you’ll be first to know when we confirm the dates.

It’s that time of year again when the media, ever divorced from the reality that land grows food, promotes ‘No Mow May’

Whilst we want to promote biodiversity & species rich grassland; we need to remember that our food comes from the land. We are not separate from the land. Nature is not just something nice to look at. It’s an ecosystem that supports wildlife, yes, but we are also part of that system.

Our grassland supports our cows. We make hay at the optimum time for nutrient density for them; this is so that we do not have to import soya to feed them. By the time July rolls around, more often than not, especially on our hilltop farm, the grass would all have gone to seed and be dry & unpalatable.

Leaving grass to get to this point to benefit birds, bees and other meadow species and then importing feed from some far away monoculture of soya or grain; is simply depleting, and destroying diversity elsewhere.

To me, this is the same as refusing well farmed British Meat & Dairy in favour of protecting the environment’ and instead opting for mass produced imported avocados, pulses and legumes from huge monocultures around the globe, that are depleting soils, watercourses and land.

If you’re lucky enough to have a lawn; why not make use of it by growing your own vegetables minimise your reliance on imported foods that are devastating ecosystems across the globe. It’s not hard, we all used to do it.

And as for meadows, support your local farmers by buying high quality British raised Meat & Dairy so that they can maintain & manage thriving hay meadows & the wildlife that thrives within them.

And, finally whatever time of year you decided to mow… do it with a scythe.
Petrol mowers and strimmers destroy more wildlife that a bit of mow-saic scything in May ever could.
