Insights from Woodknowledge Wales Small Sawmill Survey

Wales’ timber industry faces a critical data gap, as small sawmills—key to rural jobs and local supply chains—are largely absent from official statistics. A survey of 20 mills reveals the sector is at least twice as large as reported, processing over 5,000 tonnes annually and sourcing most timber locally. Despite modest volumes nationally, these mills provide around 150 skilled, year-round rural jobs and produce essential products like cladding, fencing, and bespoke joinery. The findings highlight the need for better data and targeted support to unlock unused capacity and strengthen Wales’ timber economy.
