Just getting over man-flu 🤧 so didn’t enjoy getting up at stupid o’clock & then a foggy & wet drive across the Peak District to attend the heathrow_airport Business Summit at Everton Football Club.

However I’m looking forward to hearing from the speakers about the opportunities available to regional businesses at the airport.

Hoping the early bird catches the worm - the croissant & cuppa are going down well 😊

How do you spend your day? Mine recently started with rainbows, had a Haribo mix in the middle and ended with bricks 🧱 🌈

I started the day with a walk with Nellie 🐶🐾 before heading up to Leeds for my final meeting with Grafters Super Groups - Leeds Central.

I was genuinely sad to say goodbye to Gary Ainley and the team as I’ve made some great friends and picked up some good projects during my time as a member, but now I’m running the Mansfield Grafters Super Group with Richard Anthony, it’s just become a bit too much to juggle.

The Haribo went down well though 😂

Afterwards I caught up with fellow member of Mansfield Grafters Super Group to thrash out the final details for some floor plans I’m drawing for him.

Then I popped over to the Construction Dynamics site in Birstall where I’m supplying the bricks and specials. It was great to see the new homes taking shape 🧱

And after my recent hernia op, it was also fab just to be able to drive again ❤️‍🩹

Last Thursday I swapped bricks for fashion and afternoon tea at the Style Exchange in Manchester 👗🧁

It was a fantastic afternoon of networking, pre-loved fashion and fundraising for the Emerging Leaders Programme, supporting the next generation of women in construction.

💻🔐 How well protected is your business from cyber crime?

We have a special guest speaker joining us at tomorrow’s Mansfield Grafters Super Group meeting.

Phil Viles from the East Midlands Cyber Resilience Centre will be talking about the cyber risks and threats facing businesses, the support available through the EMCRC and sharing NCSC-approved tips and guidance to help protect your business from online crime.

The EMCRC brings together police, business and academia to help SMEs improve their cyber resilience, so this should be a really useful session for any business owner.

There’ll also be plenty of time to network and make connections with other construction and property professionals. 🤝

Last Friday I had a meeting with Thread Architects to review samples for a project in Sheffield.

The client is from London and wanted a warm yellow brick, similar in character to those often seen in the capital.

We looked at three wienerberger Österreich brick options, together with timber samples for the proposed cladding, to see how the materials worked together.

This is one of my favourite parts of a project, getting the materials together and helping narrow down the right combination 😊

Last Wednesday I had a trip down memory lane with a tour of WE ARE Ibstock - at the heart of building ’s Eclipse factory.

It’s been nearly 30 years (scary!!) since I was a Director’s Executive PA at Ibstock, so there have been a lot of changes since the ‘new’ Keller kiln was installed in the early 1990s!

The tour was really interesting, seeing the factory in production, going on top of the kilns and peeping down at the gas burners firing the bricks at over 1,000°C 🔥

Watching the robots move the bricks around was amazing - they looked like they should’ve been synced to music 🎶😂

I also enjoyed looking around the sample library, including the EcoHabitat products. My favourite was the hedgehog-friendly concrete fence boards 🦔🫶🏼

Thanks to everyone at Brickability Ltd and RIBA East Midlands Region who were involved in organising such a great evening. It was lovely to catch up with people and meet some new ones too.

Great goodie bag as well, including a Wispa, my favourite chocolate bar! 🍫😂

How do you spend your day? Mine sometimes involves being on scaffolding looking at bricks… 🧱

A recent site visit to a Grade II listed property in Leicestershire where the original natural slate roof had previously been replaced with much heavier concrete roof tiles.

The increased roof loading has contributed to movement of the external walls, resulting in two of the three brick arches failing.

I surveyed and measured the arches and assessed the original imperial bricks for potential reuse.

The solution? Bespoke replacement arches will be made using brick slips cut from the original bricks, helping to retain the character of the building.

𝗔𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝘂𝘀𝘆 𝗱𝗮𝘆 🧱

First, a site visit to a project in a conservation area where I’m working with the architect H-architectural Consultancy Ltd. This new build needs to blend in with the local brick buildings, so I took several samples for the client to choose from.

Then two brick matches for an extension that -architectural Consultancy Ltd. This has designed.

Couldn’t resist stopping to take a photo of the pretty wildflowers planted by 🌸

Then one final brick match for Leigh & Rose Construction LTD, where they’re repairing a warehouse wall that someone reversed into 🤦🏼‍♀️
