High storm winds can make cavity trays even more important, particularly on exposed buildings in Northern Ireland and western Ireland.

🌧️ What happens during high winds?

Strong winds drive rain horizontally against the external leaf. If water gets through the brickwork or mortar joints, the cavity should allow it to drain downwards.

A properly designed cavity tray:

👍Intercepts water entering the cavity.
👍Prevents water reaching the inner leaf.
👍Directs water towards the outside.
👍Uses weep holes to discharge the water.
👍Is particularly important around chimneys, roof abutments, openings and stepped masonry.
👍Reduces the risk of penetrating damp during prolonged wind-driven rain.

⚠️ The problem with missing or poorly installed trays

During severe storms, defects that might remain unnoticed in normal rain can become obvious:

Wind + driving rain → water pe*******on → cavity → no effective tray → damp internal wall

⛔️When a stepped cavity tray is missed — problems can follow.

⚠️We recently encountered a situation where no stepped cavity tray had been installed at a stepped roof/wall abutment.

💦The result was a vulnerable junction where water could enter the cavity and potentially lead to:

🔹 Damp pe*******on
🔹 Water tracking within the cavity
🔹 Damage to internal finishes
🔹 Increased risk of long-term deterioration
🔹 Costly remedial work if left untreated
