So recycled vs quarried aggregates, what’s the difference?

We all know that recycled aggregates can be the greener option. They reuse materials already dug up and reduce demand for fresh quarried stock.

There's still some misconceptions though. Some think recycled aggregates are more expensive due to processing or that they’re a specialist option. In reality, they’re often more affordable, easier to produce and widely available, especially when sourced locally or reused on site.

Recycled aggregates come from demolition waste like concrete, brick and asphalt. These materials are crushed, screened and turned back into usable aggregate giving new life to site waste.

However quarried aggregates have their place as well, and are known for consistency and reliability. The size, shape and strength are tightly controlled and the appearance is more uniform, making them better for visible finishes or when a specific look is needed.

Recycled aggregates are usually best for general groundwork such as driveways, yards, farm tracks and site strip. Quarried materials are often required where performance needs to be predictable.

If time is tight, recycled aggregates can also help keep things moving, especially when site materials are reused instead of waiting for deliveries.

Both have their place, and the right choice depends on the job, spec and finish required.

If you're not sure whats right for your job, we're happy to answer your questions.

Where can you spot aggregates?

You might not realize it, but you’re walking past and driving on aggregates every single day.

From patios to parks, here are some of the places where aggregates are used that you might not have noticed:

Under Your Feet: Pavements and Patios
When you walk down a city sidewalk or a neighbor's new patio, the visible surface is only a few inches thick. Beneath it is a compacted sub-base of aggregate (often called "Type 1"). This layer provides the stability that prevents the pavement from cracking or sinking under your weight.

Public Parks and Garden Paths
Many park paths use "decorative" or "self-binding" aggregates. If you see a gravel path that feels firm but looks like small stones, that's aggregate at work. Recycled aggregates, like crushed brick, are also popular in landscaping for their unique red-orange color.

Driveways and Car Parks
Almost every driveway or commercial car park uses a heavy-duty layer of recycled aggregate as a foundation. It’s chosen because it can handle the weight of vehicles without shifting, providing a solid "skeleton" for the asphalt or gravel on top.

Railway Lines
If you commute by train, the "stones" you see between the tracks are a specific type of aggregate called ballast. Its jagged edges lock together to hold the heavy wooden or concrete sleepers in place, ensuring the tracks stay aligned as heavy trains roar past.

Aggregates provide the foundation for so much infrastructure in our everyday lives.

Next time you are out, see if you can spot any more places where you think aggregates are at work.

Why you should move to recycled aggregates

We all need to make changes to deal with our waste more responsibly. This is equally true in the construction industry, which is why more and more companies are moving toward the use of recycled aggregates.

Reprocessing waste materials allows them to stay in circulation within the construction industry rather than heading to a landfill. This shift has also been influenced by planning policies and sustainability targets, which increasingly encourage developments to reduce waste and make better use of existing materials.

But it's not just about the environmental benefits; from accessibility to affordability, these high-quality, high-performance materials are consistent and suitable for many construction uses.

So, when it comes to your next project, consider making the switch. Chat with the team today or head to our website for easy ordering of a range of recycled, top-quality aggregates.

Did you know we work with many brokers across the region?

Brokers can be great for bigger site work, or projects that span multiple regions. They’ll source good deals from local suppliers and handle the hassle of coordinating multiple contractors on site.

We’re proud to be part of the local building infrastructure and are always happy to chat to other local brokers about what we can offer.

When you work in waste, you get pretty used to thinking about where it all ends up.

Our founder always reminds us “what we dump is our children’s legacy.” And it’s stuck with everything we do.

So this Earth Day we are thinking about what we do, and how we try to do things properly. Recycling as much as we can, running our sites responsibly, and always looking for better ways to handle what comes through our gates.

It’s not about big claims. Just doing the job well, and doing it in a way that looks after Norfolk at the same time.
