So recycled vs quarried aggregates, what’s the difference?
We all know that recycled aggregates can be the greener option. They reuse materials already dug up and reduce demand for fresh quarried stock.
There's still some misconceptions though. Some think recycled aggregates are more expensive due to processing or that they’re a specialist option. In reality, they’re often more affordable, easier to produce and widely available, especially when sourced locally or reused on site.
Recycled aggregates come from demolition waste like concrete, brick and asphalt. These materials are crushed, screened and turned back into usable aggregate giving new life to site waste.
However quarried aggregates have their place as well, and are known for consistency and reliability. The size, shape and strength are tightly controlled and the appearance is more uniform, making them better for visible finishes or when a specific look is needed.
Recycled aggregates are usually best for general groundwork such as driveways, yards, farm tracks and site strip. Quarried materials are often required where performance needs to be predictable.
If time is tight, recycled aggregates can also help keep things moving, especially when site materials are reused instead of waiting for deliveries.
Both have their place, and the right choice depends on the job, spec and finish required.
