Every year, one of the most avoidable reasons mowers and garden machinery end up on our workshop bench is stale fuel, and the choices you make over the next few weeks will decide whether your machine fires up next time… or refuses. You will see an example here of stale fuel (top picture) taken from a machine compared to fresh fuel (bottom picture).

Why petrol goes bad…

Modern E10 unleaded contains up to 10% ethanol, and once it sits in your tank it starts to break down in around 30 days.
That leads to:

• Moisture absorption
• Fuel separation
• Sticky varnish deposits inside the carburettor
These tiny blockages stop fuel reaching the engine and suddenly your “perfectly fine last summer” mower won’t start.

How to avoid stale fuel repairs…

You’ve got two simple options:

• Run the tank dry before storing your machine
• Add a fuel stabiliser and run the engine for five minutes so treated fuel reaches the carburettor
• Use a stable fuel alternative such as Aspen

What you mustn’t do is park your mower up with half a tank and hope for the best.

• Briggs & Stratton Fuel Fit, keeps your normal petrol fresh and stabilised
