🌲 Rethinking the Traditional Scout Hut

Growing up in the UK, most of us remember the classic scout hut — practical, functional… and usually freezing in winter.

Many of those buildings are now 40–60 years old.

Poorly insulated. Expensive to heat. Difficult to maintain.
Yet Scout groups across the country continue to do incredible work for young people in spaces that simply weren’t designed for long-term energy performance.

I believe we can do better.

Built on the Past: Why Construction Standards Are Blocking the Future

Most building standards were written over 30 years ago—designed around toxic, fossil-based materials with no regard for carbon or circularity. These outdated rules are now so embedded in policy, insurance, and certification that sustainable materials can’t even enter the market.

The result? We’re forced to build the same, but worse—just to stay compliant. If we’re serious about net-zero homes, we need to rewrite the rules from the ground up. The future of construction can’t be built on yesterday’s standards.

If we are serious about decarbonising construction, lowering costs, and delivering housing fit for the 21st century, we can no longer retrofit the future onto a framework designed for the past.
