Sir Robert Geffery's School and Community Farm

Sir Robert Geffery's School and Community Farm The School and Community Farm of Sir Robert Geffery's Primary School It was about 5 foot high in bracken and brambles.

Back in about 2002, the Worshipful Company of Ironmongers gave the school a 2 acre field next to the school. Jan Berryman suggested that pigs would be good to clear the ground and our first Alice was moved in. From there we decided to keep the pig and start a school farm. We now have the field split into about ten stock proof paddocks, with outdoor learning areas, a polytunnel, solar heated hot wa

ter for handwashing, water plumbed throught the field for drinkers and watering and a fenced area for the hens and ducks. Plus some Guinea Pigs and some resident natural rabbits!

Another brilliant Farm to Fork after school club yesterday, where children took farm lettuce and eggs, locally sourced flour and yogurt to make flatbreads, and created a tasty, seasonal, low food mile snack!

They even headed home with a pot of dough to show off their new cooking skills to their families. 🥙

A tasty afternoon on the Farm for some of the Reception children today, who went to the Allotment to explore all the items growing that we can eat! 🍽️

We found early signs of plums, strawberries, onions and potatoes and found some yummy lettuce too. Food miles...?? About 30cm! 😉🥬

It's been another jam packed week on the Farm, with Year 1 weeding the KS1 no dig beds and picking fresh greens for the animals; Year 3 cleaning out the guinea pig hutches; Farm to Fork club planting marigolds to attract the pollinators and tasting freshly picked radishes and Reception children making a support and planting out the first of their pea seedlings! 🌱

Not to mention Year 4, who have taken on the daily Farm duties this week too.

So much happening on a daily basis, well done everyone! 💚

Last year, towards the end of summer term, we had a generous donation of strawberry plants from Kernock Park Plants.

We're delighted that they're absolutely thriving in our Allotment beds and we're hoping for a bumper crop of juicy strawberries this year! 🍓

Farm to Fork after school club has begun! 🤩

As part of our ongoing work with LEAF Education to bring farming into everyday school life, we have formed a Farm to Fork after school club to learn about sustainability, seasonal eating and basic cooking skills.

For our first week, we made butter! 🧈

After discussing local producers of dairy products, we took some Langage Farm Dairy clotted cream and put it into clean jars.

🥄 First we stirred...
🫨 Then we shook.....
🫨 Then we took it outside to the farm and shook whilst we walked...
🌿 Then we picked some fresh chives from the hanging baskets (with a taste test of course!)
✂️ Then we chopped our herbs
👀 Then we observed the separation of buttermilk and squeezed it with makeshift butter paddles
🧂 Before finally mixing in a sprinkle of Cornish seasalt and fresh chives!

The children were very excited to go home with a pot of their very own handmade butter! 🧈

We are excited to bring a mix of kitchen and allotment based sessions over the summer term and get the children excited about growing and eating their own produce!

Well done year 2 for making a brilliant start to filling our rejuvenated sandpit!

Following generous fundraising and grant donations from Wickes, Councillor Paul Cador and Sir Robert Geffery's Pre School, the sandpit is almost ready!

We purchased sand from The Dumpy Bag Man and today, Year 2 moved approximately a tonne from the playground, all the day down to the bottom of the Allotment. KS2 will take their turn to finish it tomorrow, before we purchase some new ride on tractors to complete the project.

We just can't offer these exciting outdoor play opportunities without funding support so a huge thank you to everyone involved! 💚

This Thursday and Friday, Year 2 and Year 5 will start to transport our delivery of play sand from The Dumpy Bag Man of Doublebois all the way down to the newly refurbished sandpit. 🪣

We'd be really grateful if any Year 2 and Year 5 parents can please send in a bucket with your child on their Enrichment day...any size will be helpful, as long as they can carry it.

We'll be forming a human chain and practicing our teamwork skills!

Reception children enjoyed a visit to the Allotment this afternoon to pot on some peas and give everything a good water.

We also took Lenny some leafy green branches as a tasty snack on the way past.
