The effects of using cement to repoint sandstone buildings 👎🏼

Trapping the moisture in to the core of the wall and ultimately causing internal damp and also helping the decaying process of sandstone. The moisture is breaking the stones properties down whilst trying to escape through the stone rather than the lime joints and beds as designed.

Working with lime this autumn? Don’t just check the weather while you’re applying it — think about the days afterwards too.

As temperatures fall, curing takes longer and protection becomes increasingly important.

Lime Green’s guidance recommends:
• Don’t apply render below 5°C or above 30°C
• Protect fresh work from frost, driving rain and drying winds
• Use hessian or mortar fleece where appropriate
• Allow for longer protection and curing periods as temperatures fall

October can still offer good working conditions — but what happens to the weather after you leave site matters too.

Plan the curing as carefully as the application.
