The Shard: sharp, but with a soft centre.

The Shard reaches a height of 306 meters and those looking for an exceptional view over the City can purchase a ticket to the viewing platform, which covers 3 floors Another way to enjoy the view is to book a table in one of their delicious restaurants, which live 244m above the ground.

When the Shard arrived on tge scene in 2009, people were a little unsure what to make of it, but it has certainly grown roots and is now embedded into London's history. It will also always be remembered for turning blue during the pandemic as a beacon of hope and respect to all those working on the front line; blue being the colour which represents the NHS.

London never stops surprising the passerby.

Ir's not only the River Thames where you might get your toes wet. Head out for a little walk around London's historical docks and you will find ornamental canals, which echo the vibes in Venice.

In the East End of London you can find a place called Wapping, an area which was once taken over by The London Docks: opened in 1815 and stretched over 30 acres. The Docks held huge ships which came from far and wide, bringing expensive contraband to London.

Due to containerisation the docks here closed in 1969 and is now a residential haven for people and wildlife.

What an amazing façade! Banded rustication including the cylindrical Tuscan columns; and above, it looks as if two towers have merged together. “The effect is of powerful forces firmly held in check,” said Pevsner, who also called it “The most original church exterior in the City of London”.
It could only be Nicholas Hawksmoor, at it again, playing with huge masses of stone, here at St Mary Woolnoth.
But what a surprisingly small church it is, seen from the side, as you walk up Sherborne Lane!

See this and more on our City Churches walk with Rowan, taking in a southern sweep from All Hallows by the Tower to St Stephen Walbrook (or maybe the other way round- it depends on opening times):

Let’s go walking! The George Inn (and its previous renditions) in Southwark spans the centuries from the middle ages to present day. During our walk through the back streets of Southwark, we’ll see how this neighbourhood on the south side of the River Thames developed in a very different way to the City of London.

From the rapid population growth in Shakespeare’s time, to the extreme poverty of Dickens’ age and on to the bustling, energized neighbourhood of today, Southwark boasts landmarks that have witnessed all the changes. We will end our walk at Borough Market which has been situated at the base of London Bridge since the 11th century.

Join Emily Laurence Baker for a fun and informative walk. Contact us if you don’t see a suitable date; we can arrange a date that’s convenient for you. All of our walks follow government guidelines for Covid safety.

Could this really be the pub where the captain of the Mayflower ship hired some of his crew? Well, a bit yes and a bit no. It was indeed a pub near this site – slightly inland from here but today’s Angel Pub is a good representation of where Christopher Jones chose his crew.

The Mayflower captain had a lot at stake. He had no trans-Atlantic experience and his boat was a cargo ship that he had largely only sailed between England and continental Europe, with an occasional foray to the Canary Islands. He was smart enough to make up for his shortcomings by hiring experienced crew, which apparently, he did here at the Angel Pub.

Today this pub is a superb place for a drink or a meal with great views of the River Thames. How about visiting after a walking tour that traces the London connections of the Mayflower voyage? Or if you prefer a virtual tour – we’ve got that too! All things Mayflower, both virtually and walking, with Emily Laurence Baker.

Hello tulip season.

Ada Salters Garden in Southwark Park is really starting to pop with colour.

This gorgeous suntrap can be found in the middle of Southwark Park in Bermondsey. It was opened in 1936 and dedicated to Ada Salter: a women who lifted peoples spirits by beautifying the area. She did this by planting lots of trees and gifting seeded window boxes to people. She was also the first female mayor In London and loved by many.
