As the construction industry looks towards more circular approaches to design and material use, increasing attention is being given to how clay brick can remain in use beyond a building’s original lifecycle. 🧱

In our latest blog, we explore the technical considerations of specifying for deconstruction and reuse including:

🔹 Design for Deconstruction: Why mortar selection can influence future recoverability.

🔹 Mind the Performance Gap: Understanding frost resistance and soluble salt risks without a modern BS EN 771-1 declaration.

🔹 Evidence-Based Specification: The role of durability and water absorption testing in supporting long-term performance.

🔹 Localism vs. Carbon Debt: Why sourcing, transport and application suitability all matter when evaluating environmental benefit.

By viewing buildings as long-term material stores rather than disposable assets, the industry can support more resource-efficient forms of construction while maintaining performance and durability.

This week’s Brick Bulletin explores Edith Road in Haringey, a 100% social rented housing scheme by Satish Jassal Architects 🧱Highly Commended at the 2025 Brick Awards, this urban infill project achieves a measured 104.6% reduction in CO2 emissions entirely through on-site design. By utilising a fabric-first approach with loadbearing wienerberger UK Morado brickwork, the development delivers the thermal mass and airtightness needed to lower heat loss and reduce energy bills for residents. 📉

While clay bricks are often reclaimed for their classic aesthetic, they also hold significant functional value beyond a buildings original service life. 🧱

Alongside direct reuse, clay brick can be processed into graded aggregates for applications such as sub-bases, hardcore, and concrete. Additionally, crushed brick may also be used in certain composite materials, while brick dust has historically been used as a colouring agent and additive in lime mortars.

As with all recycled construction materials, environmental performance should be considered. For example, using recycled brick in new applications such as concrete may require the addition of cement, which contributes to embodied carbon.

For a technical breakdown of these processes, read the guide, Clay Brick End of Lifecycle (Link in the comments!)
