Surface Matter

Surface Matter Materials used better. We help designers and architects use surfaces to their full potential, because change shouldn't mean waste.

Surface Matter work with some of the most exciting materials out there - from sheets made of recycled paper to colourful panels that rethink plastic waste. Our design-led surfaces have sustainable qualities and can be used in everything from retail and office spaces to kitchens or skate parks. We support designers and makers by working through projects, sharing samples and information, discussing

design criteria and material suitability, supplying the actual sheet material, offering technical and fabrication information and making useful connections where we can. Our studio shows off the materials we love in action - in our desks, displays, kitchen doors and surfaces as well as prototype pieces, samples and large panels. Our love of materials drove us to curate a materials library in our studio that architects, designers, creatives and material enthusiasts are free to explore and find inspiration.

Made using recycled post-production acrylics waste, the custom Durat palette combines a warm beige red RAL 3012-53 with D0840-59 grey green to create a balanced material language throughout the café. From integrated sinks to high-traffic tabletops, every surface is designed for longevity, ease of maintenance and circular thinking.

Shaping Workspace Design

Working across architectural design, build and joinery, introduce a new reception and shared working areas at Guildhall Chambers, bringing new life to the listed building in Bristol.

A balanced material palette sets the tone. Shaped Scoop panels in Black diamond create rhythm and definition across the reception and shelving, while Richlite introduces a subtle neutral base that’s durable and designed to age well. Warm wood tones and brass detailing and surfaces add contrast and depth.

The reception of texture gives the space a clear recognisable identity, with a sense of precision that flows throughout the building. A material led approach that brings consistency, detail and long-term use into focus.
