Our name comes from Ashur, the protector. It’s a responsibility our whole team takes seriously, wherever they are in the world.

This week the NCSC issued a critical alert on PHP, urging organisations to take immediate action. Our teams in the UK and US acted the same day, following the recommended guidance to keep our systems and software protected, and they continue to monitor vigilantly.

Our customers trust us with the hardware-encrypted drives we build, and with the remote management platform their IT and data security teams use to monitor, manage, and enforce policies on those drives. "PASSWORD PROTECTED" AND "ENCRYPTED" ARE NOT THE SAME CLAIM

A password prompt controls who the software lets in.
Encryption controls whether the data is readable at all.

On many USB drives, that prompt is software sitting on top of files stored in the clear. Bypass the software, read the memory directly, and the data is still there.

With hardware encryption, the data itself is encrypted on the device. Nothing readable to recover, whatever happens to the software.

One is a door. The other is the lock on everything behind it.

For Cyber Security Awareness Month, add PIN protection to the checklist. It keeps access control on the device itself, not on the computer it's plugged into.

Pay or publish? The question boards should ask before an attack

Manchester Airports Group refused a ransom demand, and the stolen data was published online for free, affecting nearly nine million people.

Our Group CEO Andrew Willdig believes refusing to pay is often the right decision, but says organisations rarely plan for what comes next.

"When you say no, you're accepting that your data may be published, that your customers may be targeted and that you'll be dealing with the fallout in public."

The standard you've been procuring against just expired

On 21 September 2026, FIPS 140-2 officially sunset. Every certificate issued under it has now moved to NIST's Historical list, which means new procurement needs to point to FIPS 140-3.

Level 3 is a testing regime, not a paperwork exercise, and it's issued independently. Nobody self-declares it. Our datAshur PRO+A and PRO+C hold FIPS 140-3 Level 3.

Reflecting on Atea Action in Tallinn

Last week our Sales Director, Melanie Kubasik, attended Atea Action in Tallinn alongside Igor Zujev, Country Manager for Estonia at our Baltic distribution partner, Hermitage Solutions Baltics.

It was a great opportunity to meet Atea customers and talk about the practical data security challenges organisations across the Baltics are facing: keeping files secure during transport, protecting information if a drive is lost or stolen, and maintaining offline backups for ransomware recovery.

Many conversations focused on how PIN-authenticated, hardware-encrypted portable data storage can fit into everyday workflows and support existing data protection policies.

Melanie said: “It was great to be at Atea Action with Igor and the Hermitage Solutions Baltics team. Meeting Atea customers face to face and hearing about their day-to-day challenges was really valuable, and we’re looking forward to continuing those conversations.”

The National Cybersecurity Alliance's theme for this year's Cyber Security Awareness Month is "Don't Make It Easy for Them", and almost every habit it covers happens at a desk. Very little of it covers what happens when data leaves the building, on a drive, a laptop or in someone's bag.

THE QUIETEST WEEK OF THE YEAR IS OFTEN THE RISKIEST.

Semperis's 2025 Holiday Ransomware Risk Report found that 52% of organisations hit by ransomware in the past year were attacked during a holiday or weekend, and 78% of companies cut security staffing by half or more during those same periods.

Most of that conversation focuses on networks and phishing. Less attention goes to what happens to portable devices during the same quiet weeks: laptops travelling home for the break, USB drives moving between sites, with fewer people around to notice if one goes missing.

Hardware encryption doesn't need anyone watching. The protection is built into the device itself, whether security teams are fully staffed that week or not.

If your data protection plan assumes someone's always watching, this might be a good time to check what happens when they're not.

THAT'S A WRAP ON CYBER SECURITY WORLD ASIA

Twenty years in the region says a lot about the trust Halodata Group has built. This year, we were proud to be part of that story as one of the vendors at the heart of their solution-led stand.

For Kyle Zemke from iStorage, it was all about the conversations: "The most useful experience you can get at a conference is sharing knowledge. There are so many emerging technologies, it's hard to keep up alone. This was my first year at Tech Week Singapore and I loved every minute!"
