Followed the excellent Timber Frame & Conservation Ltd on this last year .
Parts dating back to 1400’s this whole structure was re rendered in 1899 with expanded metal lath / sand cement .
Obviously at the time they thought these new materials were the bees knees !
This is part of the likely on going restoration . Wood wool , non hydraulic lime using 1998 vintage Bleaklow putty .

Badly spalled and painted brick under cement roughcast here .

Joiners changed windows to arches with hardwood formers . Plus the under eaves were occupied by Housemartins which were worked around carefully .

Looking at this you’d think every arch was the same bar the door …. no such luck !

All rendered in non hydraulic lime , hand formed angles , a couple of decorative brick repairs too.

Thanks for looking.

Plastering now complete .

The Great Hall , Kings School Grantham ,
Grade 1 Listed . C1500 Attended by Isaac Newton .

360m2 completely re lathed and lime plastered .

An awkward job in the fact that the purlins and diagonal braces were in places 20 inches wide and only an inch gap .

Now it’s over to the painters to limewash and re stain the timbers then it can be shown all its glory once the scaffold is down

A job from last year now limewashed .

This lovely timber framed gable was skilfully rebuilt bottom up on one side .

Our job was to match the existing lime render ,
at the risk of upsetting the smooth render police we left our straightedges in the van .

Customer was really pleased .

All non hydraulic work

One of our current projects ,Kings Gramnar school . Circa 1500 Grade 1
Listed . Isaac Newtons school .
We are replacing the plaster and lath ceiling to the Great Hall .
360 m2 between rafters and under bracing . The work starts at 6m and rises to 13m .
Our work entails fixing 125 bundles of riven chestnut laths ( every one a cut )
To be plastered with approximately 15 tonnes , a heavily haired limestone sand and putty pricking up coat . Un haired sand putty floating coat and fine finish .
We have spent a week fixing laths but dropped back to start plastering for our sanity !
Thanks for looking .

Interesting find on a recent job , we have been repairing like for like cement and also lime render on this c1790 lodge .
We came accross these footprints on a lead verge . The oldest was 1839 most were mid 1800s . Most recent 1971
A few things struck us , how small the older shoes were , was it child labour ?also the shape of the shoe , what were workmen’s shoes like ? What is interesting is the fact the cast lead is in great condition probably 200 years on .
