The North Downs, Kent where traditional architecture feels right at home.

Using the correct materials and skilled trades throughout is what elevates a Tudor-style property from decorative pastiche to something architecturally convincing and enduring.

This beautiful Tudor-style dwelling was completed in 2013. Using Lambs Handmade Tudor Imperial 2" Red Rubber Range bricks, along with bespoke brick specials and arches, created a strong commitment to authenticity.

The Imperial 2" format was particularly important to the client in achieving true Tudor proportions, ensuring period correct detailing. Using a slimmer brick height helps recreate the horizontal emphasis typical of historic 16th–17th century buildings.

The use of traditional Green Oak offered structural integrity and natural character as it seasons, while the Lime render and mortar is breathable and flexible, ideal for traditional construction, appearance and without the need for expansion joints.

In 1922, Sir Winston Churchill purchased Chartwell House, a picturesque country estate in Kent that would become both his cherished home and sanctuary from political life. It was here that Churchill discovered one of his most beloved pastimes — bricklaying. Amid the pressures of public service, he found in the craft a calming, creative outlet.

When restoring and building at Chartwell, Churchill was determined that new works should blend seamlessly with the existing structure. However, matching the local bricks proved a challenge. At the suggestion of his friend and engineer George Mowlem-Burt, Churchill turned to the Godstone Brickworks, owned by the Lamb family.

At the time, with Bertrand Lamb away on holiday, his son Richard Lamb took responsibility for the request. Four sample bricks were carefully removed from Chartwell’s wall so that the works could produce the closest possible match.

By 1928, the first order was completed and delivered to Chartwell. Eager to ensure Churchill’s satisfaction, Bertrand Lamb visited personally — a meeting that blossomed into friendship. Churchill, ever the gracious host, invited him to lunch, complete with fine wine and ci**rs!

From that day onward, a lasting connection was forged between Lamb’s Brickworks and Chartwell House. Thousands of bricks have since been supplied to the estate, with the Lamb family continuing to contribute materials for restoration works — even providing handcrafted arches for Churchill’s great-grandson’s home nearby.

The relationship between Chartwell and Lambs stands as a testament to the enduring bond between craftsmanship and history — a friendship first marked in 1928.
