As it's Saturday morning, a quick shout-out to our young workers 👏

There’s been a lot in the press recently about young people and the lack of employment opportunities available to them. At Abbotts, we’re proud to have a team made up of all ages — including 7 team members who are under 20.

Everyone needs that first opportunity, and with the support of our fantastic team and the patience and encouragement of our wonderful customers, many of these young people have really flourished with us and gone on to build successful careers.

I honestly don’t think it’s ever been harder for young people to find those traditional first jobs, especially with so few Saturday jobs around these days. But the young people who work with us bring energy, enthusiasm, and something extra to our business every day — and they certainly help oldies like me feel a bit younger too!

April 2026 - The Power of Sugar Soap

If you’ve ever started a painting project only to discover that paint won’t stick or peels off after a few days, the culprit is often a dirty or greasy surface. That’s where sugar soap comes in—an unsung hero of DIY prep work!
Despite its name, sugar soap contains no sugar at all. It’s a powerful yet gentle cleaner that removes grease, grime, ni****ne stains, fingerprints, and old residue from surfaces, giving paint a fighting chance to adhere properly.
Step 1: Understand Why It’s Important
Many DIYers skip cleaning before painting, thinking a quick wipe with a damp cloth is enough. Unfortunately, even “clean” walls often have invisible grease and dust, especially in kitchens, bathrooms, and hallways. Paint applied over these residues can peel, flake, or look uneven. Using sugar soap ensures the surface is free of contaminants, allowing paint to stick evenly and look professional.
Step 2: Choose Your Sugar Soap
Sugar soap comes in liquid or powder form. Liquid is convenient for quick jobs—simply dilute as directed with water and apply with a sponge or cloth. Powdered sugar soap requires mixing with water, which is ideal for larger areas or tougher grime.
Step 3: Application Techniques
• Wear gloves to protect your hands, and be careful not to get this in your eyes.
• Apply the sugar soap solution with a sponge, cloth, or soft brush, working from top to bottom to prevent streaks.
• Focus on areas prone to grease or dirt: kitchens, behind radiators, skirting boards, and doorframes.
• For stubborn stains, a second application may be necessary.
• After cleaning, rinse the surface with clean water to remove any sugar soap residue. This prevents it from interfering with paint adhesion.
Step 4: Preparation Before Painting
Once the surface is clean and dry, check for imperfections. Minor cracks or holes should be filled with a lightweight filler and sanded smooth. Sugar soap prep often reveals previously unnoticed dents, scratches, or marks that you can now repair. This extra attention to detail significantly improves the final paint finish.
Step 5: Pro Tips for Beginners
• Avoid harsh scrubbing on delicate wallpaper or soft plaster—it can damage the surface.
• Use sugar soap on doors, skirting, and trim before painting; it removes oils left from hands and improves adhesion.
• Combine sugar soap cleaning with masking tape and drop cloths to ensure a professional, mess-free project.
Step 6: Beyond Walls
Sugar soap isn’t just for walls—it’s great for prepping furniture, doors, cupboards, and even painted metal. Any surface that needs repainting or maintenance benefits from a proper clean. You’ll be amazed at how much dirt it removes that’s invisible to the naked eye.
________________________________________
Sugar soap might seem like a small detail, but it’s one of the most impactful steps in any painting or decorating project. Clean walls make painting faster, easier, and far more satisfying—and they dramatically improve the longevity of your hard work. Once you make it part of your prep routine, you’ll wonder how you ever painted without it!
