Well Dad, look what we took home. Weirdly, there’s not a scenario where we could have done this and you get to see it, but here it is anyway. Ten years of living the dream AND a shiny “well done” trophy. YUGE thank you and everyone who voted for us!
Yeah this is a ✨flashy marketing moment✨, but ugh. Plus I want and need to be honest.
We and many other studios are on a knife edge. People in smaller towns and cities love music so much, they’re making themselves ill trying to make it happen somewhere other than London. That’s true everywhere, not just in the music industry so talking about it often feels trivial against global events. But it isn’t to us and this is ‘my moment’ so here goes.
Studios in Portsmouth charge a fraction of what it costs to record in other cities, not because they produce work of inferior quality, but because our overheads are less, we don’t have big names attached and we’d price ourselves out of the market charging £1000 a day in Pompey.
We buy ‘tens of thousands of pounds’ worth of equipment and, as professionals, we learned how to use it so you don’t have to. Trust us, we’ve got you. We know what we’re talking about and we care as much as you do that work sounds good. And now we have ten years and shiny awards to prove it.
It is a use-us-or-lose-us time. It’s a time to get involved in pushes towards making things better if you can. Cross those scene boundaries, get involved even if it doesn’t seem ‘cool’. Being cynical is easy. That’s how the billionaires win. Helping is punk as fxxk.
Go follow https://www.instagram.com/wearepompey2029, don’t be a naysayer, hope is a muscle we have to flex and £10,000,000 coming into the city sounds great for everyone!
If you want to record, there is funding out there for bands, and there are bid writers who can help you apply, usually for a percentage of the money awarded. Maybe we can change how we do this. Music doesn’t have to be something only wealthy or financially established people get to do, but I won’t lie, it’s much easier for people who are.
Solidarity with and all the rest of us keeping the music coming despite the relentless challenges. Bring ‘em on! Unless they could stop? In which case, that would be great ta. Xx El
