Tribute to Huws Gray Company Chairman John Llewelyn Jones

Huws Gray Group are saddened to announce the passing of Company Chairman John Llewelyn Jones on Sunday 14th August 2022.

Co-founding Huws Gray builders’ merchants in 1990 with Terry Owen, John continued as Company Chairman for 30 years, championing the economic growth, local employment and heritage of Wales as the Huws Gray Group expanded.

Huws Gray Directors announced the passing with the following tribute: “Those who have met John will know that he was a fantastic character, full of energy and enthusiasm. He liked nothing better than being out and about in the branches spending time with yard and shop colleagues alike. He will be sorely missed by us all.”

"We’ve all got fond memories of working with John over the years. He always had plenty of time and encouragement for everyone throughout the business."

Growing from a single branch in Gaerwen, Anglesey, the Huws Gray Group has rapidly expanded over the past 30 years to become the largest independent builders’ merchant in the UK. The head office remains in Llangefni, employing over 5,000 workers across the UK following their acquisition of Grafton Merchanting GB in 2021.

We hope that you and your families are all keeping safe.

The original decision to close Qualplas on March 23rd was made to protect our staff and their families, as well as all our customers and suppliers.

The Government made clear that construction and its supply chain should continue to operate subject to Public Health guidelines. However, we said that we would only consider reopening when we saw the tragic Covid-19 infection and mortality rates going in the right direction. Current data suggests that this is happening, and, although always subject to change as we monitor events, we believe that we can start putting our reopening plans in place.

Our plan is to start a phased and limited reopening on Monday, May 11th. With restricted numbers of staff returning to work initially, we will restart operations with deliveries and pre-ordered collections only. Should you want to place an order for delivery or collection please contact us either by calling 01744 734800 or by e-mailing [email protected]

If all goes well, and if the medical and safety advice doesn’t change, we are planning to restart production on the following Monday, May 18th. However, please note that this will also be subject to restrictions due to a limited production capacity.

Please feel free to e-mail us on [email protected] should you have any drawings, or details for frames that you may want to have priced, and we will respond promptly.

The decision to close was not easy, and it is just as hard to decide when to reopen. We are delighted to be able to do so, if only partially, and hope that each day takes us closer to the end of the Covid-19 crisis.

However, each step can only be a small step for now, so please bear with us during this period of restricted trading, as we do so with the safety and protection of our colleagues and you, our customers, remaining paramount in all we do. We expect everyone to respect the measures that have been put in place to help us stay safe.

Thank you for your understanding and support for our company and our people.

Stay safe.

Dear all,

Our decision to close down all branch operations was made late on Monday evening following Boris Johnson’s televised statement. It was the most difficult decision that we have had to make in our 30 year existence. It was also the right one and remains so.

We have always been proud of our ethos of looking after our people and of fostering long-term relationships with our staff, customers and suppliers. That is why our decision to shut down involved so much soul-searching for over a week before making the call to close temporarily.

This decision was not taken lightly, but we do believe that emergency situations require clear leadership and firm decision-making. Without doubt, the whole world is in an emergency situation due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

That is why we believe strongly as individuals, as a company and as part of the construction community that we needed to step up and do our bit to protect each other. We do have a particular duty of care for our staff of course, but our decision was also taken to protect our valued customers and those people visiting us on behalf of our suppliers.

We remain totally committed to our staff, customers and suppliers, but it is a commitment that goes way beyond a purely financial relationship. On Monday night we realised that it was time to do what was right for the greater good as we battle the spread of this deadly virus.

We understand the dilemma facing many of our self-employed customers who are still waiting to discover if they will get any financial support from our governments. We would love nothing more than to be able to open and trade normally with you. However, we are not living in normal times.

Whilst continuing to monitor the situation carefully, at the moment we do not know for how long we will be closed. Once we know, we will inform you immediately so please keep across our social media platforms for updates.

With 24/7 news channels updating us on the horrors on our doorstep in Italy and Spain with doctors and nurses dying as they try to save their people, we believe that we took the right decision to close and stay closed. We believe that we are doing our small bit to try to ensure that such events don’t overwhelm our wonderful health service staff.

Our decision means that we can’t service your building material requirements at the moment. Our decision was taken to ensure that we can all do so once the virus has been defeated and we can say normal service is resumed.

Until then, take care of yourselves, your loved ones and your communities.

Terry Owen
