Someone's taken a slice off these nail heads. On purpose.

Take a closer look at the photo.

Notice how the nail heads aren't completely round?

These are commonly known as clipped-head or D-head nails.

The reduced head shape allows the nails to sit closer together in a collated strip, helping fit more nails into a magazine of a given length.

Clever little design detail, isn't it?

But there's something worth remembering.

Clipped-head and full-round-head nails aren't automatically interchangeable.

For structural applications, the nail type, dimensions and performance requirements all matter. Some jobs may specify a particular head design, so it's always worth checking before making a substitution.

Ever heard of a “leaky nail”?

No - the nail isn’t actually leaking.

It’s a term you may hear used for dark staining that develops around fixings in timber. One possible cause of marks like these is iron staining.

When moisture is present, iron from a steel fixing can react with naturally occurring compounds in certain timbers, leaving dark blue-black or grey staining around the fixing.

On a pallet, the appearance might not matter much.

On cladding, fencing, garden buildings or other visible timberwork?

Different story.

It’s a good reminder that choosing a fixing isn’t just about length and holding power.

The timber, environment and fastener material or finish matter too.

What does the number on a staple series actually mean?

71. 80. 90. 140…

It’s easy to assume the numbers tell you the size. They don’t.

Staple series are reference codes, so when you’re choosing a staple, you still need to consider the crown width, wire gauge, leg length, application and whether it’s compatible with your tool.

That’s also why two series used for similar jobs aren’t necessarily interchangeable.

How long should your fixing be?

A useful starting point is the 2× rule.

When fixing timber, MDF or sheet material, look for a fastener that’s at least twice the length of the material depth you’re fixing.

For example:
6mm → 12mm+
8mm → 16mm+
12mm → 24mm+

It’s not a rule for every job. The material, application, holding strength required and what’s behind the fixing still matter - and sometimes a longer fixing will be appropriate.

But as a quick starting point at the bench, 2× is worth remembering.
