Good to see another project taking shape...

After a small delay, we're continuing our tour of some of the highlights from the Leith Links Activity Hub RIBA Stage 2 Report. Next up, bouldering:
The bouldering zone
When we've asked for feedback on previous iterations of the proposals, one of the most popular features has been bouldering rocks. The updated masterplan shows a design by Rockworks Climbing Walls which is intended to be a flexible, low-maintenance climbing space, accessible to a wide range of ages and abilities.
Here's the description from the report:
"The ambiguous nature of the bouldering rocks provides varied and creative routing options. Beginner, intermediate and advanced routes could be displayed nearby or shared via an app. This approach reduces the need for maintenance of individual holds, which are common on traditional climbing walls, and also reduces potential liability if a hold were to break.
An easy route back down to the ground would be clearly highlighted nearby, with new routes uploaded to an app over time. Belay loops added to the top of the rocks would allow parents to belay children using ropes. A safety surface depth of 130mm rubber crumb would be required for boulders of this scale. Rockworks have provided a model of three bouldering rocks designed for this space. Their location within the site is relatively flexible, as the rocks can be separated and potentially repositioned or integrated with the parkour zone as that design develops."
