One of the jobs we are proudest of this year was a domestic basement. Specific cuts, needed the same day, loaded and delivered next morning.

That is not a job a mill will take. They roll to order and they have minimums, and quite reasonably a handful of sheets at short notice does not fit that.

Because we hold stock, it is just a phone call. Big frames or small ones, send us what you have got and we will tell you what it needs.

"So which is better then, MetFloor or ComFlor?"

Fair question, and here is why our answer is worth something. A lot of decking suppliers only carry one manufacturer's range, so whatever you ask, that is what you are getting.

We supply Tata, CMF, ArcelorMittal and Firth Steels. So the profile we point you at is the one that suits your spans, your loading and your programme, not the one we happen to have a deal on.

"Do you need drawings, or will a cut list do?" Both work, they just do different jobs.

Send drawings and we do the take-off for you. Send a cut list and you have already done it, so we just get on with supplying. Got neither yet? Send us the spans, loading and area and we will start from there.

The one thing we would say is do not wait until it is all perfect. Get in touch early and we will tell you what we can do with what you have got.

MetFloor 80 is what you go to when the spans start getting awkward.

At 80mm it is deeper than the 55 or 60, and that depth buys you span. Fewer secondary beams, less steel to fabricate and erect, and often less propping when you pour.

The honest trade-off is that a deeper deck eats more of your floor zone. If floor-to-floor heights are tight, that might rule it out on its own. Where it really earns its keep is car parks, multi-storey frames and big floor plates.

People usually start by asking which floor deck profile is best. Understandable, but it is the wrong place to start.

What actually decides it, in this order: your spans and support centres, the loading your engineer has confirmed, your slab depth and floor zone, any fire and acoustic requirements, and finally programme and availability. Because the perfect profile is no use if it turns up three weeks late.

Work through those and you are usually down to two or three options, and the tables sort out the rest.
