Due to the extreme temperatures forecast for tomorrow and the nature of the work our team carries out, we have made the decision to close early to ensure the health and safety of our staff.

We will be open 7:30am – 10:30am only on Thursday 25th June, we will resume usual hours Friday.

📢 Important Update

Due to recent family events, we've taken some time to reflect on what matters most and have made the decision to close on Saturdays moving forward.

Over the years, Gravel Works has grown significantly, and we'd like to thank all of our customers for their continued support. We've decided it's important to focus more on achieving a healthier work-life balance whilst continuing to provide the best service possible throughout the week.

We'll continue to be open Monday to Friday 7.30 - 16.00 and look forward to helping you with all your landscaping and building material needs.

HOW DEEP SHOULD DECORATIVE STONE BE?

It's one of the most common questions we're asked, and getting the depth right can make a big difference to both the appearance and performance of your stone.

For most decorative stone, we recommend laying it at a depth of around 40-50mm (1.5-2 inches). This provides good coverage, helps suppress w**ds when used with a membrane, and gives the stone enough depth to maintain its colour and appearance over time.

Laying stone too thin can leave patches showing through and may require topping up sooner. Too deep, and you're simply using more material than necessary.

Before laying decorative stone, it's always best to:

Remove any w**ds and vegetation
Level the area
Install a quality w**d membrane
Choose the right stone size for the application

Whether you're using slate, chippings, pebbles, or decorative gravel, a depth of 40-50mm is usually the sweet spot for most garden projects.

🏗️ WHAT IS A RETAINING WALL? 🏗️

If your garden, driveway, or site is on a slope, a retaining wall can be used to hold back the ground and create a safe, level area.

Without proper support, soil can move over time, leading to erosion, uneven ground, and loss of usable space. A retaining wall acts as a barrier, helping to stabilise the land while making the area more practical and visually appealing.

Retaining walls are commonly used in gardens to create terraces and raised areas, but they're also widely used on farms, commercial sites, and industrial yards to create storage bays and manage changes in ground level.

One of the most popular solutions today is interlocking concrete blocks. Their strength, flexibility, and quick installation make them ideal for projects where a traditional brick or concrete wall may not be practical.

At Gravel Works, we manufacture our own interlocking concrete blocks right here in Swansea and have supplied retaining wall projects ranging from small garden improvements to large commercial developments.
