APPRENTICESHIP OPPORTUNITY – RM Builders & Contractors Ltd

We’re looking for someone to join our team as a Property Maintenance Operative Apprentice.

This is a fantastic opportunity to start a career in construction with a well-established company based in Tavistock, working across Devon, Cornwall and Somerset.

Over the course of the apprenticeship, you’ll gain real hands-on experience on site, working alongside skilled tradespeople on a wide variety of projects. These include everything from home extensions and renovations to commercial work and historic building restorations.

You’ll also receive structured training with Greenlight Training, helping you build the skills and knowledge needed for a long-term career in the industry.
What you’ll get:

We’re proud to see the recent restoration works at Exeter Cathedral featured in Country Life, recognising the project as a thoughtful and carefully considered 21st-century response to one of Britain’s most significant medieval buildings.

Completed in 2025 as part of the Cathedral’s wider 2020s Development Appeal, the works form part of a long-term programme of conservation and renewal, delivered through close collaboration between the Cathedral team, consultants, heritage bodies and specialist contractors.

Our involvement focused on key elements within the Quire, including the installation of a new high altar with carefully replaced, future-proofing the space to support modern-day services, and the installation of a new quire floor incorporating the Jubilee Pavement. The new tiled floor draws inspiration from the work of 19th-century architect Sir George Gilbert Scott, echoing the historic tiled floors he designed in the high altar area during his restoration of the cathedral in the 1800s.

The project also included preparatory works for a more efficient underfloor heating system, helping to improve comfort for worship, community gatherings and events, while supporting the cathedral’s long-term sustainability and reducing its carbon footprint.

Working within a structure renowned for its dense ornament, surviving medieval colour and extraordinary vaulting, every intervention demanded exceptional precision, material compatibility and craftsmanship. New work was designed to sit quietly and respectfully alongside the historic fabric, ensuring the cathedral can continue to function as a living, active place of worship while safeguarding its heritage for future generations.

Projects of this nature highlight the importance of long-term stewardship of nationally significant buildings, and the value of experienced contractors who understand how to balance conservation principles with the practical needs of active historic sites.

We’re proud to have played our part in a project that supports the ongoing life, use and understanding of Exeter Cathedral — and to see the wider recognition this important work has received.

While temperatures have dropped very dramatically this month, it might be wise to take a moment to check how well your home is coping with the cold.

Prolonged cold spells can quietly cause damage that only becomes obvious once it’s expensive to fix. Let RM Builders and Contractors share 5 simple checks that can help protect your property and avoid unnecessary repair work later.

1. Start by keeping an eye on pipework. Exposed pipes in lofts, garages, and external walls are particularly vulnerable to freezing, which can lead to bursts and serious water damage. Insulating these areas is a small job that can prevent a major problem.

2. Roofing is another key area to monitor. Heavy rain, frost, and high winds can expose loose tiles, cracked slates, or weakened flashing. Even minor roof issues can allow water ingress that worsens during repeated freeze–thaw cycles.

3. Gutters and drainage should also be kept clear. Leaves and debris can block water flow, causing overflow that freezes overnight and damages brickwork, render, or foundations.

4. Inside the home, condensation is a common winter issue. Poor ventilation and inconsistent heating can lead to damp patches and mould, particularly around windows and external walls. Maintaining steady heating and good airflow is essential.

5. Finally, take a look at external walls, paths, and driveways. Small cracks can widen when moisture freezes, leading to long-term structural wear if left untreated.
