External waterproofing membranes are a category of Type A waterproofing product designed to protect around the external surfaces of below-ground structures.

These membranes create a continuous and impermeable barrier that prevents water ingress and protects the structure from moisture-related damage.

The category includes both liquid-applied products and sheet membranes. However, there are some characteristics of these products that are consistent:

1️⃣ Waterproofing Properties: External membranes provide excellent waterproofing protection by forming a continuous barrier that prevents water pe*******on.

2️⃣ Flexibility: Many external membranes are flexible or elastomeric, allowing them to accommodate substrate movement and structural settlement without compromising the waterproofing barrier.

What is a self-adhesive tanking membrane?

Tanking membranes form part of a Type A waterproofing system, creating a barrier between below-ground or retaining structure and groundwater.

For example, the Visqueen Self Adhesive Tanking Membrane is a modified bitumen rubber membrane with a self-adhesive coating.

It is cold-applied and can be used in both above and below-ground applications, including basements, retaining walls and lift pits. The membrane can also provide radon and damp proofing protection.

Its self-adhesive application means no jointing tapes are required - the substrate simply needs to be suitably prepared and primed, with 150mm lap joints that are pressed and rolled to create a continuous bond.
