What is the difference between a compressed earth block and a compressed cob block? The cob block has straw and the earth block doesn't. There are no performance differences between these two and they both behave in exactly the same way

Rebuilding a gable-end wall using compressed earth blocks. In situ, these blocks carry tremendous compressive strength and are the go-to alternative to monolithic cob......you don't need to be a cob specialist to lay these bad-boys!

Hydraulically pressed cob bricks. No longer is there a 'one size fits all' cob product to rely on.....ie the common cob block. These little puppies can be used for building walls in their own right or for those small cob repairs where blocks are just perhaps a bit too big.

Agri building. Cob over stone, Cornwall. Another demonstration of how, when roof failure is prevalent, the poor ol' cob suffers. This is a good (but sad) example of how much reliance cob has on being protected from above. The surviving mass of cob is adequately covered however the neighbouring cob is now on the ground

Part-cob cottage, Cornwall. It's not uncommon for cob to used as a secondary medium to the principal material....in this instance, natural stone. This gable-end wall has recently undergone render renewal (not guilty) and although the correct materials have been used ie lime mortar, the substrate preparation and ex*****on aren't the best. Look closely and you'll see a vertical crack (central to the chimney). These cracks can appear where the outside surface of cob is extremely thin...and it's thin because this is where the flue/s are.

1st floor chimney breast - Cornish cob cottage. Traditionally, when cob cottages were built (particularly in the Georgian era and before) there wouldn't have been an upstairs fire hearth. This example shows how, when the Victorians inherited these cottages, they would introduce a fireplace and a separate flue. Rather than 'tunnel' their way thru the cob, it was common practice to remove the cob and 'face' it with infill.

Cob over stone construction, Cornwall. Commonly, here we have a stone plinth to 1st floor height and cob to eaves. What interests me about this wall is a) the sheer thickness of the cob walling that is displaying a more than generous 'over-hang'.... b) the total randomness of how the stonework is constructed. On the face of it there appears to be no uniformity or methodology to its construction....and c) the base of this wall is splayed, almost fortress like. Conclusion: Clearly built to last (and it has...its over 3 hundred years old)!!
