We’ve been having more and more conversations with customers lately about GRP grating vs traditional steel, and it’s clear there’s a growing awareness of alternative options.

Another GRP access ramp starting to take shape.

The first two images show the supporting structure, built entirely from GRP - something that often surprises people who expect to see traditional steelwork. The final image shows the ramp with anti-slip solid top grating fitted, creating a safe and durable walking surface.

You’ll also notice the yellow flooring sections, which are used to clearly highlight changes in level and improve visibility underfoot - an important safety feature for pedestrian access. The next step is the DDA compliant handrail and then site installation!

At first glance, many people would assume this structure is fabricated from steel sections. Infact aside from the bolts, this entire supporting frame is constructed from GRP.

⭐ Project Spotlight: GRP Safety Pit Covers - Rail Manufacturing Facility ⭐

Elemy were asked to provide a safe and practical pit cover solution for a local rail manufacturing facility. After carrying out a site survey, Elemy designed, fabricated and supplied a hybrid GRP and steel system to suit the application.

Due to limited bearing for grating supports, steel support beams were required to provide the necessary structural stability. On top of this, we installed GRP grating pit covers - strong and durable enough for walkway loading, yet lightweight enough to be safely lifted for access when required.

In rail and industrial environments, high visibility colours like yellow are commonly used to improve awareness, guide pedestrian movement, and enhance overall site safety.

Another key advantage is that GRP can be easily modified without hot works on site, making it far simpler to accommodate future changes to the facility layout

As an industry leader in GRP Grating, we believe it’s important not only to supply high performance products, but to provide full transparency around their environmental impact. Achieving this EPD is a reflection of that commitment.

This milestone represents over 12 months of detailed work behind the scenes, including:
• Completion of the relevant Product Category Rules (PCR)
• A full Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) - from raw material energy source through to manufacturing
• Independent third party verification and accreditation

This EPD is more than just an ‘off the shelf’ certificate - it’s a transparent, data driven assessment of environmental impact. It provides our customers with independently verified information to support sustainable design, procurement, and compliance with environmental standards.

Pedestrian footbridges can be a major slip risk, especially in wet conditions. By installing anti slip tread covers, we’ve improved grip underfoot and made this walkway safer for daily use without the need for a full replacement.

A look back at one of our projects from last year 👇 We supplied 35m long twin GRP walkways, along with handrails, access stairs and safety gates, for a new metro depot and control centre in Wales.
