Terraforce® turns a Cape Town hillside into a hockey field.

Back in 2019, Terraforce® L Range retaining walls created the platform for the new hockey field at St Cyprians School, and with Table Mountain as a backdrop, it's hard to argue with the result.

Terraforce Retaining Walls's story:

From a backyard machine to walls on six continents.

In 1979, Holger Rust started out importing wire mesh gabions from Spain. But something nagged at him - there had to be a better, more practical way to hold back the earth. So, he built a small "egg layer" machine in his backyard and cast the very first Terraforce® S block. It weighed 50kg. And Terraforce has never looked back.

The humble beginning grew into something remarkable. By 1984 the first licence agreements were signed. By the 90s, Terraforce® blocks were being made in every major South African city. Today they're produced in Canada, Australia, the UK, India, Spain, the UAE and beyond - with sales running into the millions.

What made the difference? A block that was hollow, reversible and plantable - meaning a retaining wall didn't have to be a grey slab of concrete. It could be green. It could breathe. It could grow.

Over years that followed, the Bayer Trophy, the Concrete Manufacturers Associations’ (CMA) highest construction honour, has gone to Terraforce® eight times. In 2002, the World Summit on Sustainable Development invited them to present. Architects, landscapers and engineers on every continent trust the system.

And today? Holger's daughters Elgin Rust (Director of Accounts & Media) and Karin Johns (Director of Marketing & Business Development) carry the flame - both passionate about what this family business stands for. Different skills, same DNA: innovation, integrity, and an absolute refusal to take the easy road.

Reclaim the quiet, naturally — Terraforce® fully plantable noise barriers.

Back in 2005, Terraforce® delivered a game-changing noise barrier solution for residents of the Oasis Retirement Resort in Century City, Cape Town — shielding them from the relentless traffic noise of Ratanga Road and the N1 highway.

A 5 to 6 metre high, 500m long earth berm combined with a steep Terraforce® terraced embankment was the solution, expertly installed by Terraforce® recommended contractor Decorton Retaining Systems — and the results speak for themselves:

• Three beautifully landscaped terraces filled with water-wise indigenous plants
• A lush, green embankment instead of cold, grey concrete

MAJOR PROJECT SPOTLIGHT: eZulwini International Convention Centre & Five-Star Resort, Eswatini

This impressive Terraforce Retaining Walls® round face wall in eZulwini, Eswatini showcases outstanding engineering and sustainable design on a monumental scale!

The Challenge: Creating terraced retaining walls reaching 26m in total height to retain large cut-slopes on site.

The Solution: Approximately 7,000m² of Terraforce® L12.5 block earth retaining walls, designed as terraces - starting with a 2m first level at 85 degrees, followed by 4m steps at 80 degrees, all with reinforced concrete infill. Double skin walls provide additional strength where needed, while geogrid reinforcement ensures long-term stability.

Sustainability Meets Aesthetics: Red oxide pigment helps the blocks blend naturally into the landscape, while seedling bags with compost integrated into the concrete infill will allow vegetation to take hold, creating a living wall that softens and beautifies over time.
