In the days before the carpenter's plane came into widespread use,
carpenters would shape single pillars or beams from raw logs by swinging a tool known as a *chōna* (adze) downward, much like a hoe.

The blade left behind beautiful, irregular, scale-like marks on the wood's surface—
a texture resembling gentle waves, created by the artisan's own touch and control.

That warm texture, which invites you to reach out and stroke it gently,
offers a special kind of comfort found only in genuine wood.

One of the things we cherish deeply
is the beauty of this traditional Japanese craftsmanship.

カンナがまだ普及していなかった時代。
大工たちは「手斧（ちょうな）」と呼ばれる道具を鍬のように振り下ろし、丸太から一本の柱や梁を削り出していました。

その刃先が木肌に残した、不規則で美しいウロコ状の削り痕。
職人の手の力加減で生まれた、やさしい波のような木肌。

思わずそっと撫でてみたくなる温かな質感は、
本物の木材だからこそ感じられる特別な心地よさです。

It involves carving and polishing the wood, carefully refining the finish while observing the unique character of the material.

This door was crafted by Sato Woodworking in Date City, Hokkaido.

At Tsuchiya Construction, you can select your preferred wood and have fixtures custom-made by artisans who bring out the material's inherent beauty.

Just as every piece of wood has its own unique expression, no two handcrafted items are ever exactly alike.

We build homes in collaboration with local artisans, honoring the power of natural materials—such as solid wood, earth, and stone.
