A piece of advise for those doing construction. If you are building anything that will cost you more than 1 million Kenya shillings, please engage professionals. Stop being the architect and structural engineer of your own building.
I recently visited a construction where there were no ground beams, column bases were smaller than required and the client then decided to "add another floor" as if it would just happen like magic. Despite the fact that we advised them on how to correctly rectify the situation, they proceeded to take what advise they wanted and disregard the rest due to costs.
Please hire professionals. An architect and structural engineer should be non-negotiable. Don't settle for a foreman who you call "my contractor". Stop spending too much money building substandard structures.
There is more mathematics that goes into what you see than you think.
Do it the right way.
